Hi all, I have a stupid question today: I would be interested in knowing how much time I need to read a book. The kindle has the option of estimating how much time I will need to finish the book, but I find that it is very hesitant at the beginning of the book, and tends to fluctuate a lot. Is there a way to know how much time I actually spent reading a book _after_ I've read it? If I finish a book and then go right to the beginning, does the estimated reading time correspond to the time I spent reading the book? Thanks if you know the answer! |

I don't believe so, no. I agree that this would be interesting to know.

For me, reading is not a competitive activity. I avoid competing even with myself.

I never said that I thought reading was a competitive activity. I just would be interested in knowing. HarryT: apparently it seems possible to do it by using kindle Free Time and considering yourself as the kid. I'll try it and let you know how it works (next book will be paper though). |

I'm happy that you are not competing with yourself. This is good information to know. However, the OP was not interested in competing with himself. He's simply curious about how much time was involved in the activity of reading book x or book y. | |

Thanks for the link TimW! Knowing that it's the only option will stop me from keeping looking easier solutions. If I can remember to when I get around to it, I'll try to measure the time spent reading a book using Free Time and then go and compare it with the estimate I get when I finish a book and go right back to the beginning. This would be an easier way to have the information! |

It would be kind of neat to have those stats I think. Kindle free time though wouldn't work for me, I just looked at it and it blocks a lot of stuff like access to the store, to wikipedia and you have to create a password and then put books into it? Just my luck I would forget the darn password Maybe one day we'll get those stats. Although I am pretty spot on usually about how long it takes me to read a book and the time left does represents that. I just like stats period though. Per day, per week, per month, per year. |

Depends on how long a book is. & How many interuptions there are When I was a kid I could read a Dick Francis book in 2 hours give or take |

Not sure if anyone mentioned this but if the book is purchased from the Amazon Kindle store then the About This Book dialog usually includes a "Typical time to read" section (apparently Amazon foresaw this being a thing!). I have found it to be pretty darn accurate when judged against my own reading speed.

Yes I noticed that but I don't know if I read at typical speed or not. Anyway my experiments with Free Time will be further delayed, as apparently one can only read books that were purchased from amazon there... |
