98% sure this is my next PDA: Dell Axim x50v

... to be ordered within the next three days. Any last objections?

Btw, I noticed it is only available for 499$ at Dell Home. Are there no better "Specials" available for PocketPCs?

Alex, perhaps you should wait a couple of more days. Supposedly there is a 15% discount on the x50v starting 11/15 (see attachment )

I know I know.... I really thought of the T5, but there were so many negative comments (no WiFi, bad quality,...), that I don't think it's worth it anymore to stay with PalmOS. The Axim, on the other hand, looks like a nice device, and it is a lot cheaper than the high-end ipaqs out there.

I get it: It's a seriously phat macheen. 5 bills for a pda is waaay beyond my scope right now. Most people's I suspect. I know you haven't upgraded in a long time (like me), and got alot of time and hard work out of your Clie.

Short story: I may be right behind you on the ppc train, but not for $500.

Look underneath my avatar - handheld: Clie N760C. It is ancient, even older than your T615C I might get it cheaper than for $500; contacted someone at Dell and I might get the x50V + large 2200 mAh battery + 1SD card for a total of $520

Must only figure out the payment method, because I only have an intl. CC ;(

Sounds exciting!

If my Toshiba wasn't such a great piece of hardware despite the lo-res screen, I'd be thinking about an x50v myself. Maybe soon...
(But don't expect the PIM functions to be as slick and easy to use as PalmOS. Even if PalmOS may be running into a little trouble now, they've got the basic stuff working great. If the PIM stuff was as slick on PPC, I'd be completely content with WinME. Well, of course I'd still have complaints... nothing's perfect! )

I'm anxious to hear what you think of it all. The dark side, the x50v, VGA screens, etc.

The Dell x50v and the IPAQ VGA have gotta be the ultimate mobile PDAs for book reading, but some people don't seem to like that touch pad on the IPAQ instead of a D-pad. I think I'd go with the Dell too.

Funny thing... PalmOS is losing a lot of us previously fanatical Palm fans that weren't really looking to switch until it became the only reasonable option for us. If they could have just done the T5 right, they would have at least kept us for the near term despite delays in OS6 or lags in the hardware specs. I wonder if they can recover and keep the remaining PDA user base, or if they've decided to bet the farm on smart phones. It's sad to see what's happening. I really like Palm, and even PPC is better if there's serious competition.

Yes the problem with the PIM is that I don't even use Outlook. I hope it is not obligatory to use Outlook to use PPC's PIM.

I am in touch with two Dell representatives. Seems they have great deals if you talk to them directly. Think about it, they offered me the x50V + large 2200 mAh battery + 1SD card for US $520... if you make that order online, total price is at least $150 higher.

I think you have to use Outlook on the desktop for PIMs because it is what you sync to. Kind of like how you have to use the Palm Desktop with PalmOS. That's very interesting about the Dell reps and their additional flexibility with pricing. Another reason to buy Dell.

Welcome to the dark side, Alexander! *cue evil laughter* Seriously, I am really impressed with the hardware Dell's been offering recently. I am very, very happy with my Dell X30 (boxy shape and all!) and am glad that I actually DIDN'T wait to get an X50...not only was I chomping at the bit to get a new device before the X50 came out, but I also didn't have the money to spend on a VGA screen and a CF slot. *shrug* I am still working on my review of it, hopefully I'll get some work done on it this weekend during my 5 hour car ride down to Houston for a wedding. Ugh!

OKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK *deep breath* ......... I did it. Just ordered my x50V + large 2200 mAh battery + 1Gb SD card for $520 including shipping + taxes.

Now comes the hardest part: to wait until the package arrives.

<G> You lucky bugger....

Now's the time to start browsing the PPC forum (here and elsewhere) and think about what software you might want to install when you get the beast (a proper task manager _at least_!)

Absolutely! The guy I was talking to was really cool. He gave me a total discount of around 30%. If you ever buy anything from Dell, call a rep! I can PM you the direct extension of the guy I talked with, he can give you discounts on anything. Funny thing is he was from India, I mean he was physically located in a call center in India. While I took my order from Switzerland and had the PDA shipped to an US address (my girlfriend). Aren't we global now?
