Calibre 2.3.1 64bit problems
Lately, I 've been having problems importing books [.mobi/.epub] into Calibre. The problem started after I switched my entire library from my PC to my home server. I'm using BicBucStriim as a web-based program to view/download my collection. It works very well, and I'm pleased with it. However, when trying to import more books in Calibre, I only get error messages such as this and "empty" book results:
calibre, version 2.31.0 ERROR: Errors while adding: Failed to add any books, click "Show details" for more information ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Failed to add the book: Scan 20150710 105852 C:/Users/xxxx/Desktop/Scan_20150710_105852.epub With error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\add.py", line 366, in add_book File "site-packages\calibre\db\legacy.py", line 211, in create_book_entry File "site-packages\calibre\db\cache.py", line 57, in call_func_with_lock File "site-packages\calibre\db\cache.py", line 1500, in create_book_entry File "site-packages\calibre\db\cache.py", line 1237, in set_metadata File "site-packages\calibre\db\cache.py", line 1064, in update_path File "site-packages\calibre\db\backend.py", line 1508, in update_path File "site-packages\calibre\db\tables.py", line 130, in set_path File "site-packages\calibre\db\backend.py", line 804, in execute File "c:\cygwin64\home\kovid\sw\build\apsw-3.8.2-r1\src\cursor.c", line 231, in resetcursor CantOpenError: CantOpenError: unable to open database file So I'm at a loss of what to do now that I'm unable to import more books into the library. I've tried uninstalling/re-installing Calibre, but it retains my library history and I don't know if I should be playing around with my library if other people are looking through my server for ebooks to download. I've perused the forums here, but some answers were Linux related. Other than that, I may have to delete my entire library [backups exist] and try re-installing Calibre again? |

Did you say you moved your library onto a NAS/networked drive? Don't do that.

While the general advice is not to use a network drive, the crucial thing is that only one copy of Calibre at a time should be able to access the database. So you can put it on a network drive, but you can’t (easily) share it.
You would need some kind of script to sync the copy you access/update with another copy that can run as the content server. This kind of thing is what a NAS usually makes easy so you’d just need to make sure the sync job happened in the middle of the night when you’re not using your copy of the database. The other alternative for you is to shut down BicBucStriim and then try starting Calibre to add books. BicBucStriim might just be doing the right thing and showing the database as locked. |

Do not store the library on a NAS and then try to have calibre open and manage the NAS-attached library. But that isn't to say (and indeed no one has ever said) you cannot sync a mirror of your library to the NAS. As the FAQ points out.
@ozone123, Like Dropbox != only Dropbox. Various syncing tools exist like FreeFileSync/Synctoy for Windows, or rsync for a powerful scripted solution on linux. Or you can use a Cloud Storage service which, in addition to backing up files online, can sync between devices and a NAS. Dropbox, Copy.com, Box, SpiderOak, there are a whole bunch. Just don't use Google Drive. N.B. Avoid FreeFileSync, last I heard the installer bundles SourceForge Adware. But FreeFileSync is one of the rare collaborators. Shame, it was an excellent tool... BTW - the bloatware in FFS is not exclusive to Sourceforge, it is also 'available' from Fosshub, Filehippo etc, it's put into the install by the developers; Malwarebytes [paid version] will detect and offer to quarantine. I know the FFS bloatware installer is everywhere, but they obtained the bloatware wrapper from SourceForge. The other sites just mirror the official installer.

My point is that its a developer decision to add the bloat, not a Sourceforge decision. AFAIK there are many titles on Sourceforge which are bloat free - if that's changed maybe they should be renamed Sourceforce
![]() I know a free utility developer whose downloads have stayed roughly constant over the past decade (2-3K/month) but over the past 3 years donations have declined by over 60% - austerity, austerity. BR |

I vaguely recall that he cleaned up his act and v7 was either cleaner or it was easier to decline the bundling. I'd have to re-install to check and I'm not that motivated!. I put v7 on a new PC a while back, bu generally I turn off check for updates as older versions of FFS work fine. |

Son releases of Sigil came with Open Candy during Valloric's reign.
It was supposed to be a user Opt Out. Funny, I found OC remnants all over the Registry and filesystem even though I Opted out EVERY Time. V dropped it. Said it was not worth it (grief) for the small $ it generated. |

The installation of OpenCandy and its claimed purpose is clearly set out in the FreeFileSync terms and conditions which are provided for reading when installing FreeFileSync. I know that most, including myself do not read them (I only read them after the usual conspiracy theories started appearing on the internet regarding this). They, in this case, make interesting reading.
Note, I am not making any informed claims as to the actual trustworthiness of OpenCandy and its implementation in the FreeFileSync installer, I am just pointing out that the FFS terms and conditions are open about it being installed and make a claim as to how it is used. Insofar as when FFS is installed my experience is that when OpenCandy does its thing and additional software is offered, the offered software is offered in the form of a complete window dedicated to the offer without any sneaky pre-ticked checkbox hidden in the corner of the main application's own installation window. For myself, I have found no difficulty with this and am not too worried by the fact OpenCandy is installed (as BetterRed has said, Malwarebytes, including the free version, will remove it if one is of a distrustful nature) and have not identified any problem associated with it being so.
