AZW or AZW3?

Which is best to use for conversion to EPUB? I noticed that I'm getting duplicate warnings from Calibre if I try to import both files.

EDIT: Nevermind, totally misread your post.

AZW3 is generally going to give more advanced results or as Darryl says try to unpack it and see it it contains an ePub inside.

As I understand it the azw3 files usually contain an epub which you can extract with KindleUnpack, either standalone or as a Calibre plugin.

AZW3 doesn't contain an EPUB -- however, KindleUnpack is quite skilled at unpacking the HTML resources and assembling them into an EPUB.

This is because AZW3 is an updated and vastly improved version of MOBI (which is sometimes named .azw), and will also give better results when converting with calibre.

Aside -- if you try to import an AZW and an AZW3, you get a duplicate warning because both have the same title/author, and they weren't added as same-book-different-formats. calibre includes a Merge books feature, in case you want both formats in calibre.
