Free (nook/Kindle/iTunes/DRM-free) Church of Facebook: Redefining Community [Xtian]
The Church of Facebook: How the Hyperconnected Are Redefining Community by Jesse Rice is his tech-enhanced societal relationship-altering exploration & contemplation of Exactly What It Says In The Title, free courtesy of Christian publisher David C. Cook.
I had a quick skim inside this, and it's actually an interesting-looking, not-particularly-"inspirational" sort of thing which uses stuff like various psychological and neurological discoveries and scientific advances such as the Hubble Telescope and the writings of Dr. Oliver Sacks (Wikipedia) to introduce and illustrate its points about connectedness and so forth, so possibly it might also be of interest to more secular Gentle Readers interested in sociological stuff. And it quotes The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, so bonus points. Currently free, probably just for the next couple of days @ B&N (also UK), Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK), iTunes & Google Play (both available to Canadians), and also ChristianBook (DRM-Free ePub available to selected countries), and may also be free at other venues listed on the publisher's catalogue page (where you can watch the book trailer), and might also drop later @ BookShout (online reading & in-app download) as DCC freebies sometimes do. Description This timely release explores the community-altering phenomenon of social networking sites and what it reveals about friendship, God, and our own hearts. With hundreds of millions of users, social networks are changing how we form relationships, perceive others, and shape our identity. Yet at its core, this movement reflects our need for community. Our longing for intimacy, connection, and a place to belong has never been a secret, but social networking offers us a new perspective on the way we engage our community. How do these networks impact our relationships? In what ways are they shaping the way we think of ourselves? And how might this phenomenon subtly reflect a God who longs to connect with each one of us? The Church of Facebook explores these ideas and much more, offering a revealing look at the wildly popular world of online social networking. Last edited by ATDrake; 06-25-2015 at 02:38 PM. |
