moving collection to hd 7

Can I use the e-book software management called "Calibre" to send my current e-book collection currently assigned to my Wireless Reading Device from my computer to my Fire HD 7 ? Will this affect the sync / backup ? How do I get Calibre to switch device destination ?

no.

if the books are as they were delivered from amazon to our device, then they contain device specific DRM protection and so they will only work on that device. you need to have amazon deliver them direct to the Kindle fire for them to work there.

there are workrounds for that, which make your books readable on any device - you can find more info on within the calibre forum - but them you may lose other features that are important to you ,like x-ray and whispersync which work with genuine unaltered books from amazon only.

unfortunately , amazon has no bulk send-all-that I-own option for a new device, it's either do it their way and do it one book at a time from amazon to device, or learn how to de-drm with calibre and add-ons, then do a bulk copy from PC to Kindle - either via USB cable or wirelessly with the aid of other apps.

calibre sends to whatever device is connected to PC on USB, or it has wireless device and content server options

I have connected my new Kindle Fire HD 7 to my PC via USB but Calibre refuses to acknowledge its presence ; it only recognizes my old Kindle Wireless Reading Device ; I have tried running the Welcome Wizard to change the settings and even uninstall / re-install Calibre 2.30.0 without any effect on that front. Any suggestion

that is a kindle + windows issue, not a calibre issue.

what, if anything do you see in My Computer.? has windows done its new hardware... installing drivers.. routine yet ?

some folks, me included, had trouble getting windows to see the kindle fire and thus to install a correct driver.
so try the verious options of connect usb cable when KF is powered off, then switch on, OR connect when KF is asleep, then wake it.

once windows can see it OK as a drive, then calibre should work ok. . And once windows has sorted its drivers out, it should work ok every time after that. call amazon help if necessary, or use the mayday thingie if you have it.

me, i connect wirelessly, it is much less hassle: look at calibre companion app, or install the free ES file explorer app & configure it to see shared folders on your PC

Connecting the HD 7 via USB cable allowed it to appear in the Windows Explorer but it remained unseen by anti-virus programs like ESET NOD 32 and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware ; Calibre also did not see it. The Kindle help claims this is a software related issue and not one for Kindle. Can you sue calibre companion app with Fire HD 7 ?

that is strange - there is a "devices" subforum in calibre forum which would be the best place ask for more help. ( but see below first)

calibre companion is an app that should work with all kindle fire devices. there is a free demo version in amazon store so costs you nothing to test it & it has its own help forum

you say it appears in windows explorer so can you open it and browse folders ( which is what calibre will need to do )
sometimes these tablets & phones connect in one of two ways. as a storage device or as a media player. you need the former, and maybe you have to flip a connection setting in the fire for that. I had to in my wife's nexus phone for example. But amazon should have known that ? what version of windows do you have?. there may be a issue getting it to connect to windows XP

Calibre Companion Hitch

My new Kindle Fire HD 7 unit claims a DRM block over several titles transferred from my computer-based Calibre to the Kindle yet these were transferable to my old Kindle Wireless Reading Device without any hitch. The HD unit asks to "remove item from device and download it again or purchase a copy form the Kindle store". Suggestions ?

Each and every Kindle device, and kindle app has its own DRM key. so the book can only be opened with the kindle device or kindle app that it was downloaded from.

we have told him that twice now.- see #2
full sequence is:
1. install calibre
2. install and configure the plug in which will remove DRM
( no config needed if using kindle for PC, otherwise the unique Kindle device number is needed for the device holding the books. if the books are only in a kindle app on a non kindle tablet then you cannot use this method, you will have to re download them from amazon into Kindle for PC
3. then move the books one at a time from device or from Kindle for PC documents folder, into calibre.
( the plug-in does not always work if you move books in bulk)
4. test that books are readable in calibre e.g. open then or try a conversion.
5. use calibre to send books to whatever device you want them on

if that is too much hassle just have amazon send the books to your new device, check that the device is registered to th account used to buy the books or this will NOT work, then... EITHER go to amazon web pages, sign in, go to manage my content and devices and do it from there.
OR do it from new device, if new device is registered to teh accoutn that bought the books, go to books tab, look in cloud, download as needed.

I am trying the plug-in but cannot find the "checkbox in calibre's preferences to say that .azw3 ebooks should be viewed using calibre's internal viewer".

calibre-> preferences-> behaviour - right hand list

but if you simply want to test for DRM highlight a book in the books list and press T to open the calibre editor . it should fail to open if drm lock is present.

The T test failed so it seems the plug-in doesn't do the trick. Am I missing something ?

Here is the full story.

I purchased a Kindle Wireless Reading Device in May 2011 and, from the start, choose to download to computer / transfert via USB using Calibre as an e-book management tool for all my titles (mostly from Amazon Kindle but with quite a few from other sources).

This worked perfectly but, since February 2015, my old unit started to act up : freezing up / resetting itself several times a day. Repeated inquiries to Kindle support service could not offer any real option except getting a replacement device.

I got a Kindle Fire HD 7 on 06-Jun-15 and planned to transfert my more than 2,000 e-book titles to this new unit (hoping to also retain the annotations / highlights I had created but I was told this would not be possible).

I finally had to buy the Calibre Companion app for my HD 7 to get my on-computer Calibre program to be able to send titles from my desktop to my new unit. A good number of these Wireless assigned titles transferred without an hitch but several others when called up on my Fire HD produced this DRM-related error message : "Invalid Item. This item is protected with DRM and cannot be read on your Fire. Please remove the item from your device and download it again or purchase a copy from the Kindle store."

Since I use Calibre as my main e-book catalogue, I would like keep on using it rather than rebuilding everything from scratch.

Does this give you a complete picture ? Any question or suggestion ?
