Kobo and Overdrive Question

What happens on the Kobo when a library book expires before you finish reading it?

Does it allow you to continue reading it until you sync or connect to PC?

Thanks.

Thank you for searching

That thread is from 2010 when only the original non-wifi Kobo was available. Kobo has released a few devices since then and I wanted to know if the situation has changed in that time.

I can say from experience that the answer is no. The Kobo software is aware of the time limit of the license, and when time is up, it will no longer open the book.

I was actually trying this out last week. I had a book that according to Overdrive should have expired some time in the afternoon one day. On that day I hadn't finished the book, so when I got home I checked and I was still able to access it. I read it all evening, and finished around midnight (I think I technically may have been a couple of minutes past). From what I could tell, as long as I was actually IN the book and didn't shut it down I was allowed to finish reading it - i.e. it may not boot you out if you go over your time limit WHILE you are reading it (but I would have to test this again to be certain). Once I closed the book and tried to go back into it, I could no longer access the content.

So, to answer your question directly: A book which is expiring via Overdrive/Adobe will stop working at the date of its expiry even if you don't sync or have Wifi on, as it appears to be connected to the date/time in the device.

Interestingly, Kindle books checked out from OverDrive stay on your Kindle (readable) until you sync to Amazon, at which point Amazon remotely deletes the book. So if you keep the WiFi off you can still read it.

I think that is because it uses the same system as Kindle Owners Lending Library, which doesn't expire until you checkout another book.

If you MANUALLY change the date/ time in your kobo reader, you can read it as long as it takes you, just keep the date somewhere in between the date borrowed and the date expired. If you do this, you can keep reading, even after you get the Adobe oops error message.

or keep the book open, as ottdmk suggests.

The book will not be deleted or forever blocked after synching, either, like Amazon. but you may have to change the date again after syncing.

and don't add another library book until you've deleted the one you had to extend the time on AND reset the time back to real time. ...otherwise the new book won't be able to be opened. ....using real or fake time
