I'm about to read my first Paper Book for some time
Since I bought my first e-reader, a Sony, I have quite simply not read paper books. This is mainly because I love the convenience of the ereader. I love the fact that I can keep many books on one device and carry them with me wherever I go, all without taking up huge amounts of space. I love being able to choose fonts to read in and enlarge and adjust those fonts so as to read comfortably despite the deterioration in my reading vision as I get older. To me, a paper book has only one advantage over an ebook. That is, if I am stuck somewhere without a suitable device to read on, a print book is better than not reading at all.
So why, then, am I going to read a paper book? Very simple. Because of ridiculously high pricing as a consequence of Agency Pricing, with a smaller part played by geographic "windowing" and restrictions. As I have chosen not to obtain a pirate copy and not to wait indefinitely to read the book, I am going to borrow it from the library. However, and what a surprise, no library I have come across seems to have the ebook. So I am reluctantly going to borrow a large print paper book. A trip back in time. And a test for my poor eyes. Wish me luck. |

I wish you luck.
I just discovered that one can increase the font size with the device shown below. It's apparently quite simple to operate. |

Thanks for the laugh. It is easy to forget that we have not always had Computers and EReaders. Though I have read with a magnifying glass and all in all would much prefer an EReader!

Or, to bring modern technology back into play, there is a wonderful magnifying app for Android, which both magnifies and lights the subject. Great for reading small things like device serial numbers!

I read hard-copy books from time to time, motivated by the same "high price" factor. We have a very good library in town.

Can anyone enlighten us on the financial consequences to the Author and the Publisher if this becomes a more widely spread practice?

Don't you think it is nice to read a paper book again?
I have to use an eReader because of my long business travels, however back at home I always take the paper book, it is different, the smell the look, the handling! Don't you think? I kinda like it a lot ![]() |

Personally, I find I don't. But I understand and respect that others, including yourself, do.

I currently read exclusively on paper for pleasure. Used paper books are cheaper than overpriced ebooks and paper is generally easier on the eye. Also I find I get more of a sense of having read and finished a book on paper. E-ink is more disposable. Hard to explain.

This discussion reminds me of a humorous piece which circulated around Usenet listservs in the late 1990s: "B.O.O.K. (TM): Built-in Orderly Organized Knowledge Device."
The B.O.O.K. was touted as a technological breakthrough with amazing features such as the storage capacity of a CD-ROM, special Opaque Paper Technology which allowed both sides of a paper sheet to be used (thereby doubling the information density), and complete portability with no crashes or reboots needed. It was harder to find than I expected, but it's reproduced here (with a nice historical footnote): http://cool.conservation-us.org/byor.../an21-807.html Cartier, Marielle. "Built-in Orderly Organized Knowledge Device." Abbey Newsletter, vol. 21, no. 8 (1997). I've just revealed my geezerness by mentioning this, so I'll head back to my rocking chair for a little nap. ![]() |
