Using Calibre, able to use OneDrive as cloud service?
Hi guys,
I've been using Calibre to catalog and read my pdfs, epubs, azw, mobi books. I have it on my living room computer and would like to have it on my bedroom computer too. Now I could just copy paste the documents content of calibre.. but... isn't there a better way so if anything happens also I can have it somewhere in the cloud? I like to use OneDrive. What are my solution options? So far all I know is how to import files, edit meta data, use different covers i like, etc.. i would like to have this synched across computers. I understand there is the content server, but I don't want that as a solution. I want to be able to have this in the cloud -- onedrive please ![]() |

Moved to the Calibre forum. You're more likely to get a response there.

for safety. copy, do not move the entire calibre library folder to your choice of cloud: any/all of dropbox, one drive, google drive....
Then set up a free sync program, like freefilesync to keep the cloud copies in sync with the actual main library as often as you wish, be advised to Sync only when calibre is idle. Syncing only takes a few seconds each time, unless you have a huge library. if you use dropbox, there is an app called calibre cloud that can search and download form dropbox to your smart device. I am not aware of any app for one drive, beware also one drive is changing for windows 10; you will not be able to use it unless you have a a full-on microsoft account as your win 10 login. Calibre Cloud also claims support for the Box and Google Drive, as well as Dropbox.
There's a 'newish' one called CalibreBox, which is DropBox only, there's a sticky for it in the Related Tools subforum.+ But none of them support OneDrive nor do they show much interest in doing so. |

I am adding cloud support to Calibre Companion. Currently I have implemented Dropbox and Onedrive. It isn't released yet, but it will go to testing in the next few weeks. See the CC Cloud thread for the discussion. Feel free to add your thoughts.

my solution was to make the library on onedrive, no need for sync apps or anything like that, as onedrive automatically syncs. From any computer I'm on I change the library to point to the onedrive and voila. Works like a charm, any computer I go to it is exactly the same and updates immediately any changes.

Ahmed: There are many warnings and explanations of why that is a bad idea, you do that your own risk. It will work like a charm, until the one time it badly screws up your library.

Ps I trust you realise that Microsoft have your permission to read anything you place in one drive, and to take whatever action they wish if they think they see a copyright infringement. Even if they are wrong they will not be asking first or debating it with you

Absolutely. Calibre is not a "network safe" application. You will screw up your database sooner or later by doing this. It's a really, really bad idea.

Can you not turn off syncing while calibre is running?

yes, the counter argument is that if you only have ONE instance of a cloud storage on only ONE pc AND you always remember to turn off syncing as stated above, then it may well be safe, but until the program designer says OK to use, I would avoid the risk.
but then there's still Microsoft's big-brother snooping .... and their well documented ability to screw up / suspend access to services because they see something they think is "unauthorized activity"... many many users of outlook mail will vouch for that.... I have an outlook mail account which I use on one PC only and for one purpose only - to login to my amazon account & shop - & I got locked out of that one time for some arcane suspicious activity - requiring a phone call reset. and another time they decided my entire email history was unread & re-sent it all to my outlook 2007 client. I would not trust those guys to look after my books! Last edited by cybmole; 06-19-2015 at 12:03 PM. |

I've been using microsoft email (hotmail) since 1999 and I've used onedrive since it came out. Never had issues. I'm aware in theory any online cloud storage can be snooped. That's just the reality of it, if you have anything online. I doubt microsoft has interest in my books.

When you accept one drive T and C, you give MS explicit permission to read and edit content. Not so with dropbox et al. I object to the principle, not to the perceived risk.

I have been using Calibre portable in dropbox for over 4 years now with no problems. The best thing is its backup system where if for some if I ever do bork my metadata.db i can recover it.
With the very fast internet available these days I dont even have to remember to let dropbox sync before I shut down my pc. The only time I have to pause dropbox is when I am updating calibre. |
