Question [Enhancements] Manage Tags

Only somewhat off-topic:

For some time I have been annoyed with my implementation of "delete" in the Manage_X dialog. Deleting removes the line from the table implying it is deleted now, but cancel doesn't do the delete. In addition there is no convenient way to undo a delete without canceling and restarting.

I am changing it to look like the following:

Name:	Clipboard01.png

Size:	30.0 KB

Editing a deleted item will ask you if you want to undelete it.

Do you see any problems with such a change?

Now you come to mention it, I have noticed the way delete works now is a 'out of phase' with the way changes work.

Rather than editing (F2) a deleted item to undelete it, how about deleting it again - i.e. Del key/icon, acts as a toggle. Then maybe the 'R U sure you want to undelete' wouldn't be necessary. F2 would do nothing on a previously deleted item.

Thanks.

There are some complications with using delete as a toggle. The user can select a mixture of deleted and not deleted items. The "natural" implementation without confirmation would silently toggle them, deleting some and undeleting some, something I think is a bit strange. I have added "Are you sure?" to both undelete and delete. Both dialogs have a check box "show me this again". If you select a mix of deleted and undeleted items, you will get both dialogs, assuming you haven't turned them off. If you say no to either then nothing happens. I was tempted to ensure that all selected items were in the same state when doing a delete. I still am tempted.

I left editing as an alternate way to undelete an item.

As a bonus:
  • I added "editing" of the previous value column as undo, either of a delete or of changes to the tag's value.
  • I added F2 (or whatever it is on the platform) to open the editor.

I wonder if we should take this to a separate thread.

Any way to implement a simple Merge nTags into 1 Tag? (actually, the same goes for other similar fields (Authors, Series, Publisher) where variants are the bane of standardized data (AKA Change all these tags to 'This one')

The rename tag works, but is tedious (and prone to my fumbles )
Bulk deleting a tag can tag orphan a book (you delete one tag without verifying/adding the desired tag )

And yes, I like the new manage form

The Manage * dialogs can do this without much ado. Open Manage Tags. Copy the desired name to the clipboard, then paste it into each item you want merged into the desired name (double-click or EditKey such as F2 on item, keyboard Paste such as Ctrl-V, Return).

In the authors case there is some question about which author link will be preserved. If the target author already exists then that link will be preserved. It the target author does not exist then the link of the first author processed will be preserved (I think). I don't know how to predict which author will be processed first.

In the series case the existing series indices will be preserved during the merge.

@chaley - re Manage Tags - seems reasonable to me, happy to leave it in your tender care

Re bonus item #2 - Tag editor in Book List. Some folks might not want to lose the way it works now - ie edit in line after F2, that's why I suggested:

I wasn't clear. I added F2 in the category editor, not on the book list.

However, today only for you I added Shift F2 to the book list. It brings up the same tag editor as in metadata edit. I will submit the changes to Kovid to see if he agrees. As before I am not happy about that editor deleting tags *right now* so the operation cannot be canceled, but as before, ...
