Troubleshooting Kindle Touch - Touch not working

Hi guys, my dad's Kindle Touch, touch part stopped working. I can mount and see via usb. I've tried the hard reset. The unit works, you can see the 3g signal etc. The home button registers. Only the actual touch part doesn't function. I can't do an update due to the screen not working same for factory reset. Any ideas? I do use Linux and Calibre.

The Touch has an infra-red touch screen. Make sure there's no dirt, hairs, etc, around the bottom of the bezel which might be blocking the IR emitters.
