Kobo Glo or H2O
I'm looking to replace my 4 year old Nook Simple Touch because the rubber has become sticky and it looks really worn out (from daily abuse)
![]() The Glo is considerably cheaper but I am attracted to the water-resistance capabilities of the H2O. Admittedly, I have no bathtubs at home and I only go on beach vacations twice annually. The H2O is also slightly bigger than my Nook, which I don't think I need. tl;dr - Basically what I want to know is if the built-in light on the H2O is less susceptible to damage as compared to the Glo since it is water-proof? I'd like an e-reader I can throw around carelessly and for which a silicone case is available. I don't need to protect the screen as much as the sides and back. ![]() |

There is no Reader you can throw around carelessly. If you do, you risk breaking the screen.
I suggest you wait a little bit. The Kobo Glo HD is supposed to be coming out with the same screen as the Kindle Voyage but with better front light. See the following thread to learn about the Kobo Glo HD. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=258757 |

Generally throwing ANY ereader carelessly around is asking for trouble. The substrate of the screens are not as sturdy as a tablet or phone. |

There is no silicone case for the H2O that I have found, nor have I found a silicone case which could be used for the H2O because of the dimensions, and the unique backing of the H2O.
The H2O is markedly better than the Nook Simpletouch with Glowlight in terms of screen clarity. I'm not sure about silicone cases for the Glo as I've never looked for one. As has been noted, carelessly tossing about an ereader is likely going to cause you some issues. Though my H2O has taken some tumbles and survived unscathed others have not been as lucky. I share your desire for a silicone shell, I'm using a skin from Decal Girl right now (just the solid state black in satin/matte finish) which does make front of the H2O much less prone to fingerprints, and makes it less slick (not a major issue, but the skin helps). I'm debating picking up a fintie case since they seem fairly slim and minimal. |

I think I used the phrase 'carelessly tossing around' a bit too carelessly
![]() I'll be keeping an eye out for the Glo HD, but to be honest, I don't need or want fancy new technology or screen that straddles the thin line between a functional e-reader and a tablet. I'm tempted by the H2O because sand used to get in the bevel and affect the touchscreen page turn capability. I will happily continue using my Nook STR (withOUT glowlight) but I want a built-in light and that's pretty much it. If the Glo HD has a supposedly better light, I think I'll wait. Maybe the price for the Glo will fall and I'll get that when the Glo HD comes out. Thanks everyone! |

The Glo is being discontinued so if you want one of those don't hang around. Also whatever you do get a proper case, you need to protect the screen as much as the back and sides, not less, that's a recipe for disaster.

I love my H2O. The screen is sharp and plenty bright and the waterproofing works. I've read in the bath, in a hot tub on a cruise, and on the beach without having to worry in the least about water damage.
I replaced an original Kindle touch with this reader and have not regretted this purchase in the least. P.S. Thanks for the tip on the Fintie cases. I've been looking for something other than the Kobo sleep over. Last edited by Croptop; 04-09-2015 at 07:22 PM. |

Within a week of getting my H2O I knocked over a pot of tea next to it. No problems at all. However I'm not sure how long the little cover over the port will last before breaking and getting lost.

Maybe Kobo should sell replacement port cover?

But why buy a Glo when you can get a Glo HD for the same price? It just seems silly. The difference in the scree is very noticeable and much nicer.

Personally, I would wait for the Glo HD. But, I agree with Josieb1. The Glo is still a good device and if the OP finds one at a good price and it suits them, they should go for it. |
