Turn It Up: A Guided Tour Through the Worlds of Pop, Rock, Rap and More by journalist, music critic, and public radio show co-host Greg Kot (Wikipedia), is his in-depth overview of Exactly What It Says In The Title, compiled from years of his interviews, reviews, and other articles featured in the Chicago Tribune newspaper, as well as fleshed out with additional commentary/essays giving info on the evolving field, free courtesy of publisher Agate's Digital imprint.
This is really very nifty, with both Q&A's and regular quote-laced feature pieces on many musical stars across a wide variety of genres, including Shania Twain and The Beatles and Dr. Dre, and not simply the stars, but also producers and other professionals, and topics like the music industry's involvement with the civil rights movement. Plus, there are photos. Currently free, probably just until the weekend @ B&N (may also drop in the UK) & Amazon (not available to Canadians, but free in the UK), and might also show up later as a DRM-free PDF download directly @ the publisher's website, as Agate freebies sometimes do. And this has been the (late!) selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day. Because I'm a sucker for these kinds of behind-the-scenes backgrounder looks at pretty much any field, and it's always nice to get quality non-fiction freebies which are entertaining and informative (edutaining! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Enjoy! Description For nearly 25 years, Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune has been reviewing all parts of the popular music world: from indie up-and-comers and underground hip-hop artists to arena-filling rock-and-rollers and celebrity pop superstars. Turn It Up: A Guided Tour Through the Worlds of Pop, Rock, Rap and More is the first-ever collection of Kot's Tribune articles, covering the years of 2000–2013. Beyond informative and entertaining features, concert recaps, and album reviews, Turn It Up covers major issues associated with music and the music industry since the turn of the millennium. Kot delves deeply into issues that matter regarding the essential acts of the 21st century, the business of music as a whole, and the Chicago music scene in particular. With chapters grouped by genre—pop, rock, and rap—and a catch-all final chapter containing insights on digital music, record labels, and the evolving "music biz," Turn It Up is an easy-to-follow guide to where the music world has come from and where it is going. Kot's deep knowledge of the subject matter and unpretentious writing will make this a fascinating read for his longtime local fans, as well as music lovers far and wide.
