Feature Request: Reading Timer and Speed in Calibre Viewer
This is a feature in many iOS readers (Quickreader, Marvin) and Kindle Fire that I really yearn for when reading on my computer. I'd like to be able to start a timer for Calibre to measure my reading speed by recording the time and counting the number of words on the pages that I pass before hitting stop.
From this we get a few useful reading statistics 1) Reading speed in Words Per Minute (WPM) 2) Time to end of chapter 3) Time to end of book This video shows what I'm describing, you simply press the start button at the start of a page, read however much you want, and then press stop at the end of a page and the WPM is taken care of: https://youtu.be/37YDgxad_NQ?t=3m1s And here is Kindle's reading time estimate statistic: http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stu...features-1.png I love these features on my mobile reading apps. For some reason this seems to be lacking on every desktop epub reader I've tried. Last edited by truth1ness; 04-02-2015 at 02:02 PM. |

Yup, lots of stuff that could be done to make the ebook-viewer more of a fully-featured ereader app.
Hopefully you'll get around to some of those mprovements sometime soon. ![]() Still a perfectly decent ebook renderer, mind you. But quite barebones. Ah, well. I would use my Kindle anyway. But what with the rise of Windows tablets and all (something I don't have ![]() |

Yeah the features on my TODO list for the viewer are annotations (more complex ones than just bookmarks) and reading time.
However, annotations are likely going to have to wait till after I finish the redesign of the content server -- the content server will be getting its own in browser viewer so I will at that time have to add some sort of system for the calibre viewer and the content server viewer to sync annotations/last read position between them. |

Interesting. Who is the target audience for this browser viewer, though? There are such mature mobile e-readers like Marvin/Kindle/iBooks/etc for mobile devices and on my computer I'm using the calibre-viewer app. Personally I'd rather see the desktop app get some love with Reading Speed+Time and Annotations before adding a third reading option unless there's a large use case I'm missing.

The use case is obvious. You no longer need to sync your books and annotations between different apps/devices/reading platforms. You no longer have to rely on different implementations of e-books readers with differing sets of features and no interoperability.
IMO the target audience for this is far larger than the group of people that read long form text on desktop/laptop screens. |

+1 A decent ereader that runs in the browser, which people use anyway, definitely has uses.
Something OverDrive has noticed -- you can read borrowed library ebooks that way. People do it. ![]() |

Ah, I see. When you said browser viewer I was thinking a very barebones 'preview book' type viewer rather than full alternative to the current crop of reader apps.
I do agree there is a big audience that would want easier mobile viewing than there is now, the process is quite intimidating. I just wonder if an app that could link directly to your library through dropbox might work better. Perhaps I'm in the minority but I can barely recall when I've used browser apps in lieu of dedicated apps. I always use the Kindle app over the Kindle Cloud reader. Particularly with ebooks files, I'm not sure how you'd go about storing them. It seems like you wouldn't be able to store more than the one you have open and even with the currently viewed one I think many of the web browsers like Safari automatically refresh if a tab wasn't used for a while which would cause you to lose your book if you're not connected to your server (unless there is some kind of local browser storage feature). Not to mention an app featured on the ios and android app stores could garner many thousands of new users. |

A Calibre App + Dropbox sync workflow would whoop them, though, imho. Last edited by truth1ness; 04-03-2015 at 01:50 AM. |

A web browser based reader would definitely use local storage.

@truth1ness - the EPUBReader firefox extension reader stores books locally in a rudimentary library.

OverDrive has an app, but also offers a web interface, useful on a PC. It uses localstorage, as does Kindle Cloud Reader, as would calibre-server... for the reasons you specified. ![]() |

Neither. It would be a website you create with calibre-server version-new-and-improved.
Works on any computer, tablet, smartphone, browser, embedded device (if powerful enough ![]() No installed app, program, or plugin necessary, though you will have to allow the website to use localstorage or rely on constant internet connection. See the aforementioned OverDrive Read, or Kindle Cloud Viewer, for examples of such usage. Last edited by eschwartz; 04-03-2015 at 04:16 PM. |
