Question Keeping eBooks downloaded

Hi everybody,
Should I keep the eBooks downloaded, in a separate folder, even after adding them to Calibre library regarding the fact that Calibre copies them to its library? If yes, this is going to take a lot of storage space; if no, then can I retrieve them from Calibre library if need be?
Thanks in advance for your comments

I normally don't. I download it thru K4PC then import it to calibre and then remove it from K4PC.

Not strictly necessary - but you should backup your library to another device, see ==>> How do I backup calibre?

If you use an incremental backup strategy then its not too onerous to do it regularly - eg daily. And make sure you know how to restore from backup should you lose your library.

If you want to backup to a cloud service like Dropbox you should read this ==>> I am getting errors with my calibre library on a networked drive/NAS?

The essence of that - is don't synch your library to something like Dropbox or OneDrive whilst calibre is running, and avoid using Google Drive.

BR

I WOULD (on a off line drive)

there are many threads where the store has gone dark.

Hard drive/PC failures are lots more common than Fire or Flood type damage to your book collection

Keeping the original copies isn't very useful, they are all a-clutter (usually why one imports into calibre ) however, as said above, it would be generally useful to keep incremental backups of your library.
  • For Mac: Time Machine is probably your friend.
  • For linux: you can have fun writing an rsync script (linux users would tend to know how...).
  • For Windows: I used to suggest FreeFileSync, but they bundle crapware and potential malware these days (standard toolbar/random program "offers", if you recognize, you can opt out so it's probably safe), probably better to try something like SyncToy.

I have kept original copies of books downloaded from stores that shut down. But until a store announces it's going to disappear, there's not much point - your calibre copy will be DRM-free (if you use Alf's plugin) and much more useful than the DRMed original, which (if the store still exists) can be re-downloaded at any time.
