USE_ALT_FONTS method working on which device and FW version?

Hello,

I know there are some Hack methods there to help me add new fonts, but jailbreak becomes impossible after the FW version 5.4.5.X (I can't remember the version number accurately)

And I know the USE_ALT_FONTS method, it worked for me when I was using my KPW1.

I searched this forum for a while and didn't find a conclusive thread about USE_ALT_FONTS method, almost all the Kindle font threads are about jailbreak.

I want to know the USE_ALT_FONTS method is working on which device and which FW version. As my team and I are working on a project, to help those Kindle-newbies easily do some tricks on Kindle, so this is important to us. We don't want to release a feature that rely on jailbreak.

5.1? I think, or 5.2, to 5.3 (inclusive), no matter the device (meaning Touch, PW1, PW2). Only the Touch is still running on that range as its most up-to-date FW.

Thank you, agree with your conclusion.

I currently have a Touch and the USE_ALT_FONTS method works, its FW version is 5.3.X

Confused if 5.1 and 5.2 will also do.

i use USE_ALT_Fonts method to install Myanmar Zawgyi font on 5.6.1.0.6 without JB FW.. It work perfectly.

As per my knowledge, I am afraid I cannot downgrade my Kindle FW version without jailbreak.

If I can jailbreak, then I need not to stick with the USE_ALT_FONT method.

You mentioned you had a Kindle Touch.
Those can be downgraded by installing the Amazon release image desired.

In general, anything not running 5.5.x or 5.6.x firmware can be downgraded without a jailbreak.

Reading the threads on the subject in this forum is a good way to increase your knowledge of the limits you will be trying to describe.

Sorry for my nuisance and thank you for the information, now I am downloading the firmware 5.1.0 to my KPW1 which is running 5.4.4.2.

Hope I can downgrade it smoothly.

I followed your guide in another post, as well as Amazon's official guide.

But every time I copy the .bin file into Kindle's root path, disconnect Kindle from computer, then the .bin file will be gone, the "Update Your Kindle" option is unavailable.

Also tried reset my KPW1, the same result.

Searched on G and this forum, doesn't get any clue.

FW 5.1.0 is the firmware for the Touch (when the .bin just disappears it usually indicates that you are using the wrong FW version)...if you are looking for a very early FW for the PW1, try firmware 5.2.0, or 5.3.1, or 5.3.4, or 5.3.5.

Yup, as GoSharks mentioned, you won't ever go lower than 5.2.0 (IIRC) on a PW1, that's the 'initial release' FW.
