Convert to .AZW with embedded cover

I use the Kindle desktop software, which will read .azw, but it only sees the embedded cover; it won't use a separate .jpg. Is there anyway to convert a LIT or EPUB file to .AZW and combine a downloaded cover into the same file?

Calibre will do this automatically with whatever cover is in the calibre metadata.

Also, convert to AZW3, Kindle for PC supports it now.
