I have one question: Is there a way to prevent replacing book cover with Amazon cover when syncing sideloaded books with correct Amazon ASIN?
Amazon book covers have strange aspect ratios so I prefere to use custom-made covers.

Dr. Drib -- a limited amount of somewhat-offtopic is normal on MR, and I think this was fairly justified as these things go. It was tangentially related and I would have overlooked it.

tono -- the cover gets downloaded rather than extracted, but as long as there is currently a cover thumbnail ondevice it will not be checksummed and overwritten.
And calibre will automatically sideload one with the book for this exact reason.

My experience is different. I know that cover gets downloaded. If I put ASIN in book then my cover in home screen is allways replaced when connecting to wifi.
Sometimes I read books in different languages and want to have native cover, so I set that in Calibre, but put ASIN of english kindle book, because of Goodreads integration. But connecting to wifi always mess my cover with amazon one.
There must be something I am doing wrong
Edit: BTW I allways use Calibre to send books to device.

Dunno, my covers don't get replaced is all I can say. Seems rather stupid anyway, costing extra bandwidth for, usually, no purpose whatsoever.

I see you have several devices.
Do you see this behavior on all of them?

Yes, as long as ASIN is correct one.

Just checked on PW2 with 5.4.5.1. There is everything OK - no cover replacement. I used the same book
Edit: So it is KV problem!? Or maybe firmware. I have latest one on KV. PW2 is jailbroken.

I gave PW to my wife, Cybooks to my aunts and K3 to my mom, so I only have PW2 and KV right now Yes, guilty, I am addicted to ereaders for about 6-7 years now...

I researched little and come to this:
When I copy book to KV thumbnail is created in \system\thumbnails\ folder on my device with name thumbnail_*GUID*_EBOK_portrait.jpg. *GUID* is from EPUB contained in AZW3 in <dc:source> tag "calibre:GUID".
When I connect to wifi (cover is changed obviously) and another file is created in same folder with name thumbnail_*ASIN*_EBOK_portrait.jpg. The last one is the one which I see in cover view mode.

Yeah, so I am guessing it is a firmware issue. Good investigating.

Try renaming the thumbnails to use the ASIN. If that works I suggest reporting it as a bug to calibre.

Edit: I have to correct myself. thumbnail with GUID is from previous version of book without ASIN. So, the problem seems to be with KV generating thumbnail, which is replaced when first connect to wifi. Not Calibre.
Solution is to backup original thumbnail (before wifi) and then copy it over the replaced one. Cover is not replaced anymore, even when connected to wifi and "Sync and Check for Items".
