Thumbs up Free (iTunes UK) Where the Shadows Lie by Michael Ridpath [Iceland Cop Crime Mystery]

Where the Shadows Lie by UK author Michael Ridpath (SYKM, Wikipedia) is the 1st in his Fire & Ice series starring long-time Boston-resident Icelandic native expat homicide detective Magnus Jonson, who returns to his homeland after a brush with a Boston drug cartel, and incidentally winds up solving old and new murders while he's there, this installment being the one which sets that all up, free courtesy of publisher Perseus' Corvus/Atlantic imprint.

This is the iTunes UK store's featured Free Book of the Week.

Currently free, probably just through Monday @ iTunes UK. Not available in any of the other regions or stores that I spot-checked (except the iTunes Ireland store, which is technically not part of the UK, although it does belong the the British Isles) though you've got about a day and a half left in which you can hope for a price-match @ Amazon UK, if you're feeling optimistic (or willing to try the Report A Lower Price function a lot).

And this has been the (late!) selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day.

Because insert standard copy-paste text about my inordinate fondness for cultures which produce dragon boats and Iceland being my 2nd-favourite country in the world, so it's really nifty to have stuff set there and involving the culture go free for other Gentle Readers to enjoy, even if I can't actually can't get it myself.

But as a consolation, the books in the series do seem to be couponable @ Kobo (though a little pricey-looking to begin with), so they're going on the wishlist for a future price-drop sale + user-applied discount combination.

Enjoy!

Description
Amid Iceland's wild, volcanic landscape, rumours swirl of an eight-hundred-year-old manuscript inscribed with a long-lost saga about a ring of terrible power.

A rediscovered saga alone would be worth a fortune, but, if the rumours can be believed, there is something much more valuable about this one. Something worth killing for. Something that will cost Professor Agnar Haraldsson his life.

Untangling murder from myth is Iceland-born, Boston-raised homicide detective Magnus Jonson. Seconded to the Icelandic Police Force for his own protection after he runs afoul of a drug cartel back in Boston, Magnus also has his own reasons for returning to the country of his birth for the first time in nearly two decades - the unsolved murder of his father.

And as Magnus is about to discover, the past casts a long shadow in Iceland.

Binding Iceland's landscape and history, secrets and superstitions in a strikingly original plot that will span several volumes, Where the Shadows Lie is the first in a thrilling new series from an established master.

Maybe this would be a good time to mention that when I type "not available to" I actually mean "the freebie offer is not currently available in this particular region/store that I checked, but the actual book is still for sale" (otherwise it gets "doesn't seem to exist in" or "out in a different edition/rights held by other publisher").

That said, the Kobo/Amazon US version you kindly took the time to post really isn't available to Canadians in the geo-restriction sense, since apparently the e-book rights are held by Minotaur there, but for Gentle Readers in the Commonwealth, there's a money-saving omnibus of #1 & #2 out from Atlantic/Corvus for a couponable $11 CAD at the moment:

Fire and Ice Anthology: Where the Shadows Lie / 66 North @ Kobo CA (unhelpfully and inaccurately labeled as 4th in the series)

I know what I'm going to spend my next decent-value contest codes upon if the sample reads well.

I didn't know that it wasn't available in Canada. Sometimes books that are available in the UK aren't in the U.S. but this one is, and that's why I mentioned it. It would be nice if they didn't geo restrict books so they are available in one country but not in the one next door. It's about as confusing as figuring out where a given book is PD and where it isn't.
