Thanks to all in first post

Sincere thanks to all of you on this forum for allowing me to learn an awful lot in a very short, but a bit confusing!, first couple of days.

I went from reading/thinking about one reader to the other and all of your contributions made it become more clear to me what I needed and wanted.

Special thanks to all in the Sony Reader Threads, HarryT and to Kovid Goyal in particular.

I was waiting for the opportunity of adapting my passion for reading to the 'modern' times, the space my books were taking up were getting to be a problem, the taking care of so many books during many moves from country to country were also difficult. The real problem with many books (records, cd's, tapes, dvd's etc.) is the enjoyment of USING and ENJOYING them again and again. The hassle seemed just too much at times. Adding new books even seemed less enjoyable in the long run.

I am profoundly upset in a way about the many different formats out there, which seem to be a purely commercial enterprise to lock the consumer in a system that does not allow any leeway for the future and which also forces one to pay over and over again for already bought material. But I will get over it and adapt once again, after all I got, in a different medium, through the VHS-BetaMax War of the 80's....

I think buying a E-reader is a turning point in my reading life and I am looking forward to it.

I am a habitual non-registered 'lurker'on forums, but this time I could not NOT acknowledge the immense help you all provided me.

Many, many thanks again,

Jelis

Salut Jelis,
you're right, it can be confusing at first ! but i'm sure you'll be able to figure things out and find the best reader for you.

i know what you mean about books taking up too much space... one of the best things for me since getting my liseuse is being able to give away so many of my paper books, when i replace them with digital editions. i still have too many... and some of them i will always keep... but i've gained a lot of space already and i'm still replacing the old classics which are available for free.

you're right about the format wars ; as consumers, we are always the losing ones in such situations. but hopefully we will be able to standardise the format soon. you may have read about the epub format ; it's a format being specifically created by a standards committee with this in mind. it's not yet fully implemented but things are moving forward. you'll find plenty of information about that here if you're interested.

i hope that the incompatible formats will soon be over. in the meantime, you can try to get around this by keeping to open format editions with no DRM whenever possible. and don't hesitate to write to publishers and let them know how you feel. the publishing industry is just entering this "modern age" as well and we can help them find the best ways (whether they want us to, or not ! ^^).

don't miss the "e-books" section of the site (click on the link at the top left of the page) ; we have a collection of over 5000 (and growing every day) free public domain books which have been formatted by our members. they are beautiful quality editions on every subject. we have a small collection in french as well (i see you live in france), which hopefully will also be growing !

welcome to the forum !

Hi Jelis and welcome to the Forum. I got a 505 back in January and like it it a lot.

I had the same problem with pBooks you do. My wife finally put her foot down and made me donate them to the nearest library. Now I have 65 books on my reader and there is peace in the house.

Thank you, Ervserver, Zelda (oh that name...), CassidyM and Spartacus, for welcoming me to the forum.

It took me some time to get used to being here and reading a lot of the very useful material here. I am more of the lurking type I guess, but did wander into the Lounge area and read that you are all karma-sensitive in one way or another, so here goes...

I tried the first couple of days to give karma to people whose posts I had appreciated, but probably not always on the posts in question. Probably silly effect, but what did I know? And more importantly, what do I know now?

And then I got this message: "you must spread some karma around before you give it to X again."! That taught me and then the other message about having spread too much karma overall... I felt silly.

So belated thanks and karma to the 4 of you.

well, silliness is an affirmed goal around here in general (but you've been to the lounge, so i guess you've noticed that by now) but you shouldn't feel silly about that. there are a couple of rules to giving karma : you can't give it twice to the same person without giving it to 2 other people in between, and you can't give it for the same post more than once, and there is also a limit on how many times you can shake the karma stick in one day (i think it's 10 but i could be wrong). but there's no shame in running into one of the limits, it just means you've encountered a lot worth rewarding, which is a good thing right ?

Thanks for all that info.
As for Zelda that name always reminds me of Zelda Fitzgerald, but for my children it (starting to tread very very carefully here .......... (still treading carefully) only (I did it! Can safely stop all this treading) refers to a game.

Oh, perfect response, Jelis. It looks like Zelda just made another BFF.

honestly

Montsnmags - nothing comes to mind immediately seeing your name, but give me time - thanks for that link, I had a good laugh.

Actually I carefully edited out the "only" in "it refers to a game". The second part of the pseudo made me cautious.

I have been reading a lot on the forums but had not come across the link you provided.

Zelda-pinwheel, trying to get them start guessing again what it all could mean, many thanks Zelda-pinwheel. If I say it often enough they will forget about all of this.

Spread all the karma you want. The forum just wants to make sure you don't give it all to one person, that's all.

Thank you Bob, I understand perfectly and although I did feel a bit silly, it did not last that long either.

Zelda_Pinwheel, the editing job has been done as per your command. I also discovered some very nice new toys, so if you have time... but I guess you don't, you are way way above ... just kidding. Great discovery, fun, even more to read now.
