Free (nook/Kindle/iTunes/ePub) Practice of Presence of God [Xtian 1600s Monk Writing]
The Practice of the Presence of God (with Spiritual Maxims) by 17th century French monk Brother Lawrence (Wikipedia) of the Carmelite order, is a vintage classic compilation (Wikipedia) of his letters and conversations and other writings involving life, the universe, and everything his faith meditations on Exactly What It Says In The Title, free courtesy of Christian publisher Baker Books.
There's a brief intro and a few contextual notes in the back of this edition, which is otherwise a public domain book, from the looks of it. Non-religious types who are interested in having a first-hand look (well, technically 3rd-hand, since it's passed through a compiler, and then a translator, and then probably to a 4th hand for updating for the modern reader like Baker sometimes does with their public domain reprints) into a pre-Industrial mindset may also find this of interest. This has previously been offered free in mid-2014. Currently free, probably just for one day @ B&N (may also drop in the UK), Amazon UK (slated to drop in the main store), Kobo & iTunes & Google Play (all available to Canadians), and ChristianBook (ADE-DRM ePub available worldwide). Description At any moment and in any circumstance, the soul that seeks God may find Him, and practice the presence of God. Brother Lawrence, a seventeenth-century French monk, learned to practice the presence of God at all times. And you can, too. Here in one volume are two classic works by Brother Lawrence. Each book reveals how to practice God's presence and see His glory in every facet of your life. The Practice of the Presence of God is a collection of documented conversations and letters that reveal the heart of this humble man. He wrote, "The time of business does not with me differ from the time of prayer, and in the noise and clatter of my kitchen . . . I possess God in as great tranquility as if I were upon my knees at the blessed sacrament." Brother Lawrence's wisdom and spiritual insights have helped bring people closer to God for more than three centuries. The Spiritual Maxims of Brother Lawrence, a lesser known but equally outstanding work, is a summary of his teachings. Throughout, he develops one great theme, best expressed by the psalmist, "In Thy Presence is fulness of joy." |
