Sigil does not recognize WOFF

Sigil (0.8.4) does not recognize woff font files as fonts. It will add these to Misc directory though. But since the files are not recognized as font files, additional options such as font obfuscation are not available.

Is it possible to correct this?

WOFF is not an EPUB2 font

Sigil is an EPUB2 editor (at this time) that has graciously allowed foreign (to EPUB2) files to remain (earlier versions did cleanse the garbage )

Supporting WOFF font embedding is a requirement for epub 3 but not epub2 as I understand things. Do you know of any mainstream epub2 readers that will properly handle embedded .woff font files? I believe that .woff fonts are basically ttf or opentype fonts with extra compression and extra metadata but I am not 100% sure.

If you actually want the fonts to work with most epub2 readers, I would stick to ttf font files.

Either way, expect it to be part of future Sigil epub3-aware releases.

And please... the fact that iBooks on an iPad might handle it is not a reason to support it.

Not sure why not ...

3.5.2 Embedded Fonts

EPUB 3 requires Reading Systems to support the OpenType and WOFF font formats for embedded fonts in conjunction with the CSS @font-face rules. Refer to CSS Fonts Level 3 [ContentDocs30] for more
0.8.4 does produce ePubs with embedded woff files, that pass epub-check and work fine in the readers I've checked. Only the additional features are not available.

I think adding full support (doesn't seem difficult to implement) will be beneficial as opposed to saying 'i-wont' treat 'foreign files' equally ...

Well, if it is so easy to implement, why don't you do it?

Sigil is intended to become EPUB3-aware at some unspecified future time. The appropriate time for EPUB3-specific features to be implemented is as part of that release.

It is silly to use EPUB3-specific features in an EPUB2, and since Sigil officially deals with EPUB2 alone, it would be doing a disservice to Sigil users to make them think EPUB3-specific features are part of the standard Sigil featureset -- they might accidentally use them.

Hi,

Getting current Sigil to recognize .woff as a font file is probably an easy change that could be made. That said, all efforts post Sigil 0.8.4 will be on developing a new trunk that will hopefully work well with both epub2 and epub3 and at that time, I will incorporate the changes to recognize .woff fontst.

Thanks

Thank you - I've initiated a pull request with suggested changes - if that could be of any help.
