I just obtained a replacement K3 WiFi for one that was stolen and am in the process of customizing it. I believe Amazon installed an update today while I was in the process, as I believe the version showed as 3.4.0 when I started earlier today.
I was able to install jailbreak 0.11.N and ss-0.42.N successfully, but when I attempted to install lpad-pkg-001c I find that the "Update Your Kindle" is greyed out. Given this, I tried a restart of the kindle, which gave me an "UPDATE ERROR: 3" and I had to hit "R" to resume reboot after the message. Is this a known problem or a new issue? What do I do at this point? Dave Last edited by dhdurgee; 02-02-2015 at 01:55 PM. Reason: clarification, typo |

@dhdurgee: Nope, that's just the usual "wrong .bin file for your specific model" thingy

Hmm... I am copying the _k3w_ file to my kindle, isn't that the correct one for a B008 kindle? There is no "README" in the lpad-pkg.
Here is a display from the USB attached kindle: dhdurgee@DHD-Z560 ~/Downloads $ ls -l /media/dhdurgee/Kindle/ total 120 drwx------ 2 dhdurgee dhdurgee 8192 Feb 10 2010 audible drwx------ 2 dhdurgee dhdurgee 32768 Feb 2 2015 documents drwx------ 3 dhdurgee dhdurgee 8192 Feb 2 2015 extensions drwx------ 4 dhdurgee dhdurgee 8192 Feb 2 2015 linkjail drwx------ 9 dhdurgee dhdurgee 8192 Feb 2 2015 linkss drwx------ 2 dhdurgee dhdurgee 8192 Feb 10 2010 music drwx------ 4 dhdurgee dhdurgee 8192 Feb 2 2015 system -rw-r--r-- 1 dhdurgee dhdurgee 37918 Feb 2 2011 update_launchpad_0.0.1c_k3w_install.bin dhdurgee@DHD-Z560 ~/Downloads $ So I don't know why I am getting the error, thus my post. MRPI? Could you please clarify what I need to do to accomplish this? I am not a kindle developer, simply a kindle user. I do have a linux mint x64 system and can download and run whatever you direct me to. If there are more diagnostics I can run on the new K3 for you as well please let me know.
This is the fourth such K3 I have attempted to customize and the first time I have encountered any issues in doing so. Dave PS: I don't know if this means anything, but I seem to recall another .bin file in the mounted kindle root directory when I copied the jailbreak and ss updates into it. This file was gone when I copied the lpad update in. Is it possible that an Amazon update went bad and left things in a bad state? What action should I take next? Ok, that clarifies what MRPI is. I assume then that I would need to install KUAL to be able to use it?

I got kindle-mkk-20141129, KUAL-KDK-1.0.azw2, kual-helper-0.4.N and kual-mrinstaller-1.4.N installed on my K3. After doing so I copied the lpad installer to the mrpackages directory and ran the installer. I got an error and KUAL does NOT show lpad as installed.
I get: Launching the MR installer . . . (more missed) Package script failed. moving on. Done. restarting UI . . . So where do I go from here? Dave PS: Device ID shows: Device: Kindle 3 WiFi Platform: Luigi Board: Shasta rev.1 Device Code: 08 Type: Production FW: 3.4.1 (2540470001) I just noticed that there is a minimal logfile containing: -- Running install.sh for launchpad 0.0.1c k3w I (update_launchpad_0.0.1c_k3w_install.bin) @ Mon, 02 Feb 2015 20:17:23 -0500 -- Running install.sh for launchpad 0.0.1c k3w I (update_launchpad_0.0.1c_k3w_install.bin) @ Mon, 02 Feb 2015 20:25:09 -0500 -- Running install.sh for launchpad 0.0.1c k3w I (update_launchpad_0.0.1c_k3w_install.bin) @ Mon, 02 Feb 2015 20:29:23 -0500 Not much help, I fear. Hmm. I don't remember if launchpad's installer does any logging, so I'll check before asking you to check the system logs to get more info

Okay, it doesn't do any logging, but I think I know why it barfs under MRPI:
Code:
killall ${HACKNAME} 2>/dev/null Wrapping it around a test should help, something like: Code:
if killall -0 ${HACKNAME} 2>/dev/null ; then killall ${HACKNAME} 2>/dev/null fi Last edited by NiLuJe; 02-03-2015 at 11:44 AM. |

I regret to inform you I see the same behavior with the new installer.

What is the next step in getting this fixed? Will you need to modify the installer to do additional logging to enable you to determine the cause of the error? Is there additional debugging information about this particular K3 that I can provide?
All I know at this point is that this K3 does not recognize what should be the proper installer, as the update option is greyed out in the settings menu, and your mrinstaller fails to work with the proper installer as well. Is there a list of particular requirements that might be missing on this particular K3? Could something have gone wrong with the JB install? I don't know enough about how this works to undertake an investigation myself, I don't even know what can be accessed from the kindle drive as visible from my linux system and what would require being accessed by a special debugging program. @dhdurgee: Most likely something dumb needing to be fixed in the installer. Wanted to check this out yesterday, but my K3's battery was dead, so it ended up sitting there, charging, instead of being useful

I'm not so sure it is a generic K3 problem, as I have successfully used the same installer on three previous K3 units. This leads me to supect that there is something unusual with this particular K3 unit.
The only other alternative I could think of to getting launchpad installed would be to get KUAL to interface with mplayer and myts, which are the other packages I use launchpad to access in addition to the various shortcuts launchpad itself provides. I have yet to receive a response on the KUAL thread. Dave |
