Maximum number books transfer to Kindle at one time?

What's the maximum number of books you would load transfer to your Kindle at one time before stopping and waiting for indexing to finish before adding more books?

I ask because indexing sometimes takes a long time and I don't want to overload my Kindle.

Thank you.

P.S. My question refers to batch transfers, not total storage -- i.e., how many books would you transfer in one batch (then wait for indexing to complete before transferring more books), not how many total books would you store on your Kindle at one time.

If you are going to add in a lot of eBooks in one go, plug in the Kindle so it won't run out of battery.

Same goes for Kobo Readers and some Sony Readers as they all do some work on the eBooks loaded and that can drain the battery or lower it enough that you'll want to charge the device.

The most I've ever loaded on a Reader at one time was about 125 eBooks in one go. That was switching from the 650 to the T1 and when I switched from the T1 to the H2O, that was 119 eBooks.

I've loaded about 400-500 books at once and it wasn't a problem. Yes, you have to wait for indexing, but whether you wait it out all at once or in spurts still adds up to the same amount of time.

I've loaded up to 800 on my Kindle Keyboard before I started to have slowdown issues. It was painful when I had to reset my Kindle to factory settings to fix a problem. Since then, I don't have more than 200 books and magazines (I have a lot of cookbooks).

Tarana, when you say you've loaded up to 800 books but now keep no more than 200, are you referring to single batch transfers? I've clarified my question in the first post (sorry if the original was unclear), but I'm wondering about maximum number of books to transfer in one batch, not total number of books stored (though that's an interesting question, too).

You won't overload your Kindle -- I think the worst that can happen is one of them jams the indexer and you have to go through tons of books to find out which to delete. For that reason, you might want to do it in small batches, and confirm that the Kindle finds all those books before adding more.

I mean, I assume that by indexing taking a long time, you mean this question to refer to the search indexing - not just the shows-up-onscreen indexing. Right?

I think we're talking about the same thing. When I load new books then search for a nonsense word, the results will show me how many and which books are not yet indexed under "Text in Books." Sometimes books index within a few minutes; other times a book will remain unindexed for several hours, or even a day or two, but will eventually finish indexing. That's why I was thinking I should transfer books in small batches so as not to overload my Kindle.

Yep, and just saying -- I don't think you need to worry. It will get done when it gets done, the important thing is that the indexer does indeed notice the book is there to index.

The Kindle won't be overloaded, it will just take it nice and slow and go through each book in turn.

Thanks! That's very reassuring. I like my new Voyage very much, but this indexing exercise it does is strange and new to me

Indexing runs a LOT more quickly if you connect the Kindle to the wall charger.

No, 800 was the total. I did a maximum of 550 in a single batch transfer with no problem. Until it was done with the indexing, it was slower than usual. It wasn't a problem once I was in a book though. If my book had say illustrations, it would have been annoying since those already are a bit slowish compared to text only.

The reason why I keep fewer than 200 now is because I like to have my stuff in collections and I didn't want to spend my life redoing that after the last time. I haven't yet figured out the new collections feature with Calibre.

Most Kindles do not do collections without being jailbroken. So if your Kindle Keyboard is not jailbroken, Calibre will have nothing to do with collections being creatied in your Kindle. There is a thread on this someplace on MR.

Yeah, the Kindle Collections plugin thread. Which says that you do not need to be jailbroken to manage collections on the Kindle Keyboard.

You know what they say about jumping to conclusions...

(It would help if you weren't so eager to put down Kindles simply to disparage them.)

Thanks! I had a vague impression that was the case, but wasn't sure if it was just my imagination. Glad to hear it's not.

Thanks Tarana and everyone else who has replied to this thread or answered the poll. Looks like I've been worrying unnecessarily about this indexing thing
