Cannot open calibre

When I attempt to start calibre, I get the splash screen and the usual messages, "Starting calibre: loading books," then "initializing user interface." After that, the message comes up, "The main calibre program has encountered a problem and needs to close."

When I follow the provided link "to see what data this error report contains," I get lots of numbers which mean nothing to me, and which I cannot copy and paste, anyway.

I tried multiple times to open calibre with the same result. I tried re-booting my computer, as well. I'm using Windows XP and calibre V2.0

Can anyone tell me what I should be doing next? Thanks!

Sorry, but you cannot run version 2.0 or newer in Windows XP.

Hang on a sec. I have not updated calibre for what seems to be months, ever since I got that memo that said we couldn't go past (I THOUGHT) v2.0.

Your linked info says v1.48. How could this be? When did that change? Am I imagining that we were told not to go past 2.0? And why did everything work just fine until today?

Anyway, does this mean I must uninstall 2.0 and install 1.48 and all will then be hunky-dory again?

You have one of the (System) reasons why 2.x is locked out of XP installs.

If your hardware is up to it (CPU w/SSE2, RAM=4G+). W7 or Linux. If not, Off lease business class W7(x64) systems can be had for ~$300

BTW FWIW I have one of the XP ones that does run 2.0 (I do get editor rare Editor crashes), but as you know, there will be no updates (currently down 15 releases). My main Library is on W7pro (one of those off lease systems )

Haha Ducks, everything has been going so swimmingly for me for what seems like a year or longer since I had such problems with calibre, I was flummoxed with this. Is it that I just read the initial information that we XP users should "stay with" version whatever and just assumed it was the one I was using at the time that was announced? In other words, I misread it?

I don't know from nuttin' on the specs business, except that I can't expand the RAM on my laptop past my one update to 3G. So I guess I must get serious about a new machine.

But seriously now, and please talk s l o w l y can I just dump v2.0 and install 1.48 as easy as all that? Thank you for your prompt responses theducks and mrjenkins.

Before you go off and do something serious.

It just stopped running?

What else changed on your system recently?

A downgrade is simple.. .
BUT
Do any of your devices require a 2.X release level driver? (probably not)
Have you grown into any of those 2.0 features

OK use the OS to uninstall the current calibre
Get the older release from the Calibre site and install it. That is it. Simple.

I just can't see anything. In the past 30 days I installed a scanner I never use and one program I've never used but just uninstalled anyway. Weird this just started out of the blue. I certainly haven't changed anything in the past week.

Doesn't matter at the moment. I'm having big withdrawal pains without my books. Gotta go do that downgrade NOW. Then start shopping for new hardware. Am I understanding correctly that you recommend 64 bit?

Try buying a NEW 32bit system

Inventory your programs (and hardware) you use. Will they run (drivers available) on a 64 bit system? (My wife has a Janome embroidery machine that will not allow their USB drivers on x64)

FWIW Coming from XP, Think HARD about whether you want to jump to W8.1
Demo in the store.

Me: W7 (and there are still differences to get used to. OTOH Security is way better)

Uh, Windows Installer tells me, "this installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor [ha,ha] to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package"

Wut?

Did you download the 32bit Windows version
no x64 in the file name

Something on your system (rogue A/V, Malware or a download helper) may be corrupting the file (s/b 53.8MB actual size:56,419,840)

Dude! It's BACK!

Since you didn't answer me in less than 5.25 seconds, I went back and downloaded it again (yes, 32 bit lol). And for whatever reason, it installed snicker-snack on that attempt. So all is right with the world at the moment.

Again, I do appreciate all the hand holding.

Until my next calibre-associated panic attack....Cheers!
