Depth of Field: Tips on Photojournalism and Creativity by Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Alex Garcia is a lavishly illustrated DIY guide to Exactly What It Says In The Title, assembled from his long-running blog on the Chicago Tribune newspaper website, free courtesy of publisher Agate's Digital imprint.
This is really quite nifty, and while some of the advice is a bit on the bullet-points "lite" side, there's also some fairly in-depth discussion stuff about the field in it, including a full behind-the-scenes mini-diary of doing a celebrity photoshoot (with Zac Efron, in case you were wondering), and plenty of Garcia's own award-worthy photos and anecdotes about taking them. Currently free, probably just until the weekend @ Amazon (not available to Canadians; large filesize & fixed layout format which will require a particular level of compatible device/app to comfortably read). ETA: now also free for the benefit of international Gentle Readers directly @ the publisher's website (DRM-free PDF available worldwide). For the international Gentle Reader who's interested in this book, but not so much in doing the dance of geo-restriction circumvention required to get it, the original blogposts look to be available on the Chicago Tribune website's archive here: Assignment Chicago: Tuesday Tips, with the photojournalism project they seem to have originally accompanied at the main Assignment Chicago archive site. And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day. Because I'm a sucker for behind-the-scenes making-of stuff which also tells me things about how stuff works in the first place, and thus education + entertainment = edutainment, which is doubleplus good. ![]() ![]() Enjoy! Description Comprised of weekly blog posts by author and Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Alex Garcia that originally appeared on the Chicago Tribune website, Depth of Field is a comprehensive and useful handbook on how to become a better photographer. It is both a practical guide that has many applicable lessons and entertaining anecdotes, serving both amateurs just picking up a camera for the first time as well as seasoned photojournalists. Garcia discusses the demands of photojournalism and interviews his peers who are pursuing a variety of projects, lending the book a broad perspective on numerous fields. The advice contained in Depth of Field discusses techniques, gadgets, and technology, as well as cliches to avoid. Throughout the book, Garcia displays his talents with pictures, portraits, and full-color examples of his best work. Depth of Field is perfect for anyone interested in the academic as well as practical elements of photojournalism, providing an in-depth portrait of the ethical, artistic, and journalistic concerns that go into this powerful storytelling medium.
