Many Modern Library titles $2.99 US Amazon
Many many titles in the Modern Library and Modern Library Classics imprints are currently $2.99 at Amazon US.
There are far too many to list here, and not all titles of the imprints are included. The titles include works from many different genres of fiction and nonfiction. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_no...brary+classics |

They appear to be on sale for $2.99 at B&N and Kobo as well. Since most, if it all of them are in the public domain, I see the main reason for picking any of them up is because they have a superior modern translation still in copyright. Does anyone have specific recommendations for any Modern Library translations?

Another possible reason to choose these over free versions is when the Modern Library version has added value such as introductions, explanatory notes, etc.
I lack the experience to point out any particular items. One thing I'd like to know is if it is better to wait for the Modern Library Complete Shakespeare vs. buying the individual titles. |

I did a spot-check of the titles that appeared on just the first couple of pages when following LovesMacs'/Koland's (by the way, thanks LoveMacs for making the post!) Amazon link. Here are five titles that I quickly found: - At the Hands of Persons Unknown: The Lynching of Black America, by Philip Dray. - Christmas at The New Yorker: Stories, Poems, Humor, and Art, by New Yorker magazine. - By the Sword: A History of Gladiators, Musketeers, Samurai, Swashbucklers, and Olympic Champions, by Richard Cohen. - Evolution: The Remarkable History of a Scientific Theory (Modern Library Chronicles Series Book 17), by Edward J. Larson. - The Catholic Church: A Short History (Modern Library Chronicles Series Book 5). (It seems that all of the Modern Library "Chronicles Series" books are currently in copyright.) So, don't ignore LoveMac's post thinking that all of the titles are old! The fact of the newness of many of the Modern Library titles, at least those that following the link brings up, causes me to believe this to be a better sale than I would have thought at first glance--the price of $2.99 for books in copyright seems like a better deal than $2.99 for books in the public domain (notwithstanding the added value of the introduction, explanatory notes, etc. of public domain books in the Modern Library edition, that LovesMacs pointed out, and the superior modern translation that bgalbrecht pointed out). For epub readers, Kobo and B&N.
I picked up The Essential Writings of Machiavelli, A Night at the Opera: An Irreverent Guide to The Plots, The Singers, The Composers, The Recordings, The Making of 2001: A Space Odyssey, This New Ocean: The Story of the First Space Age, Three Musketeers (Modern Library Series), might pick up the Hunchback of Notre Dame after I compare the translation to the ones I have. I wish I knew how long this sale will be on. Last edited by bgalbrecht; 01-05-2015 at 11:04 PM. Reason: fixed b&n link, purchases |
