Error with Calibre Toc.xhtml file
Hello, all!
So, I'm designing ebooks using indesign. I usually neglect to create a toc in indesign itself because i use images as chapter headers instead of text, and haven't quite gotten the gist of how to get indesign to generate a toc off of that. When I upload the book I manually go in and construct the toc.ncx file, which works just fine on my kindle and phone. However, below it I get this error next to the toc.xhtml file: "This file is a text file that is not referenced in the spine" Is this because I haven't created a TOC in the indesign document? Or am I doing something else wrong? Any help greatly appreciated. I'm also having issues uploading epubs to smashwords, which has an error that states: "File 'META-INF/encryption.xml' in EPUB not listed in manifest!" I'm thinking it might be related to the above issue, but maybe not. Thanks, everyon! ![]() |

It does sound like your two error messages come from the same problem. And that problem is not listing all of your content files in the .opf file.
You mention constructing the toc.ncx file, but you also need to make sure that all content files are listed in the <manifest> in the .opf (which can vary in name and location and is named explicitly in the META-INF/container.xml file). Then additionally you need to list a reference to each 'content' file in order in the <spine> in the .opf file. That reference uses unique id you gave it in the manifest entry. The spine is what tells book readers what files show in what order. I suggest examining the contents of the .opf file for a few epubs and reading the epub standard about manifest and spine. |
