I like Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series,I also prefer series that have not been concluded as of yet, I like the anticipation of the next book. What do you recommend?

I've not read Sword of Truth but I always recommend Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files to anyone who likes Fantasy series!

Butcher has already planned out the series and given his fans the expected number of books (Which I will place behind this
Spoiler:
[ 20 "standard" books like his first 15, and then a trilogy ending, for a total of 23 books]
tag in case you want to be surprised).

I have yet to find anyone who has not enjoyed this series, once they've given it a fair chance. The first book seems to intrigue most readers enough to continue, book 2 seems to be an acquired taste. Many get truly hooked around books 3 or 4 (for me it was book 4).

You've found one now. I read the first 4, but found them rather formulaic and abandoned the series at that point.

In all seriousness, though - I'm sorry you didn't like it. The series seems to have gotten better with each book, IMO. If you didn't enjoy the first 4, however, I don't know that it would ever fully appeal to you.

While there are quite a few that I would put on my favorites list, I don't think I remember anyone having their first favorite after book four.

For me it just seemed to be a succession of "Harry meets a really scary supernatural threat. Harry finds a way of defeating the threat. Harry meets another really scary supernatural threat. Harry finds another way of defeating it." etc. etc.

They're very well-written books. Just not to my personal taste. I know that most people really enjoy them .

Actually, that trend ends pretty much with that book! I don't know if you remember the ending of book 4, but those events completely change the course of Harry's life - personally and professionally.
The monster of the week fades away and we're thrown into what becomes a huge, defining, story arc in the series.

Thanks - maybe I'll give it another go one of these days.

I hope you decide to one day.

The supporting characters start to come into their own as Harry himself grows and changes. There are two, actually, that I absolutely love (neither of whom you would have met as yet).

It really is a great series when you get into it. [/fangirl pitch ]

How about Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive. High fantasy, only books 1 and 2 are out so you have 8 more to look forward too.

Each book is over 1,000 pages and you can get both for cheap at Amazon US right now.

Way of Kings ($2.25)

Words of Radiance ($3.75)

There's always Mr Martin's "Game of Thrones" series. That's not going to be finished for a good long time.

I like open series where each story is complete. Terry Pratchett's Discworld series for example.

I don't like open series when it's a single story arc and there is no prospect of completion any time soon. Isobelle Carmody and Melanie Rawn, I'm looking at you! I won't read (or watch) GoT until it's complete.

Nyssa, I also dropped Dresden for the same reason, but mean to get back to it some day. You might also like Simon Green's Nightside novels.

1. I hope you do decide to give Dresden another chance. I know I'm being repetitive (sorry) I just really like the series.

2. I'm not sure if I really want to thank you for the recommendation... It just made my TBR that much taller....
I'm not sure if I've seen it recommended before or if its the fact that
the first book sounds just like Dresden. Scary.
It does sound like something that is right up my alley, either way.

Thank you!

Haha, yes, I think the Nightside series is into double figures now. Then there's everything else he's written... I've been a fan since the Forest Kingdom/Hawk and Fisher series and quite like the current Eddie Drood series. Keep meaning to read Deathstalker but haven't quite got around to it yet. Best of luck.
