They're simple to load on just about any eReader ... just a pain in the neck to try to read. I'm not a "tablet person" but if his main purpose for an eReader is reading PDFs, I would suggest a tablet.

Given that you want PDF, get a tablet. There is no eInk based Reader that will do all that well for PDF.

depending on where in the world you live, the Kobo tablets (Arc 7HD or 10HD) might be worth a look as they're priced VERY low and are nicely skinned for book reading. you could find an Arc 7HD for $100 or less, and you can buy books from Kobo, Google, Amazon, or sideload your own, in either epub or PDF format. just install the proper Adobe PDF reader app (the other pdf reading apps suck in comparison)
