My M96 seems to be insane

Hi Folks --

I really do hate to say it after everything that's happened, but so far my experience with the M96 has made me feel much like I've always imagined a very old person with a distrust of technology might feel when forced to use a computer: "how do I make this thing do what I want?"

Because the behavior of the interface (on my unit anyway) seems totally unpredictable. The first time, clicking on a particular icon will open up a menu of options ... the next time poking on the same damned icon will take me back to a page in a book I never planned to open ... the third time it might be back to opening a menu of options or it will do some undetermined third thing I may have done four pokes of the stylus ago. Meanwhile the screen does a lot of flashing and the displays of PDF texts I've so far managed to see are very un-contrast-y and hard to read.

I know this is supposed to be Android, but I'm having a difficult time relating this Android to the Android that's on my Samsung tablet. I can find the Play Store, at least. There's that. I managed to install Moon+ Reader.

Does this wackiness perhaps have to do with calibration of the stylus? I tried doing this calibration, and the screen became unresponsive. I reverted somehow using the navigational buttons, but I suppose if my stylus was uncalibrated before, it now is uncalibrated again.

This cannot be how this device is supposed to function.

A couple of specific questions and then I will stalk off wishing for a comprehensive User's Manual:

1. When I have a file open in Oreader (or Neoreader, which I guess is or is not very similar/the same thing), how do I reliably bring up a Close/Exit menu for the application? Because I have scoured the screen with my admittedly older eyes, poked everywhere with the stylus and have found nothing. The Home Screen still insists I am reading some story by Rudyard Kipling that I never intended to open.

2. Are there options for what the Home Screen displays other than the one that has "Currently Reading" and "Recently Added"? Because those are not of particular interest to me. I'd rather have a Home Screen that feels like a ... Home Screen. This one is pretty dull.

Thanks, sorry for griping.

/Glenn

Behavior is some better with the old, skinny stylus from my M92.

1. If my eyes see fit... there is nothing really similar to an exit menu. Oreader is pretty beta, so I guess it's intended by the developer to close it by pushing twice on the hardware return- button (the rubber 2nd one).

2. Simply download ADW-Launcher (or Nova Launcher, 1st I like better) from the Playstore, it will replace your native home screen and bring lot of customizations.

Google the: "Onyx Boox T68 Tips and Tricks Guide (+Video)". The T68 has similar software as the M96.

Thank you eb00ker -- those are helpful hints.

As I've familiarized myself with the interface, the experience of using the M96 has become much less ... hebephrenic. I'm even enjoying it most of the time.

The unit still seems to respond to wand - taps inappropriately, often enough to be disconcerting. I'll tap on an icon, only to have an icon two away from the one I just tapped respond. But I'm getting better.

My next hurdle: I'm so paranoid from my M92 nightmare, I can't imagine trying to take the M96 out of the house. I'm afraid I'll put it in my bag and the screen will spontaneously shatter, or something ... which stinks because I'd love to take it on the bus and stuff.

I have to say that once I calibrated successfully (that is, did not attempt to calibrate, wind up with a screen that did not respond to the stylus at all, and have to undo the calibration) the squirrely-ness I was experiencing decreased dramatically.

Nice! Yay!
