Reset Kobo Glo

Hi,

I am having serious problems resetting my 2 Kobo Glo's with very strange behaviour.

Firstly when I have reset them at separate times recently, I have had one of them firstly when synching books to it sync them to the main memory, 16gb micro hd card and then back to the memory and give the message that the ereader is full (I only have a total of 9-10gb worth of books).

I have had one of them sync everything (I think), it then locked up and only a reset via the power and light button would work.

The other one synced all of the books and then proceeded to download an update and froze at 29, 31 and 34% consecutively for long enough for me to use the power button to 20 seconds to restart the machine.

I have currently got one of them syncing books, although it has now crashed onto the sleep screen, and when I use the power button to open the glo it is cycling the image between full screen and zoomed in.

Also when I have been factory resetting them using either the hard reset or the option in the device information bpth of the devices are taking about an hour to go from that to the point where I can log into my kobo account.

Does anyone have any idea how I can get them working again or have I managed to break both of my Kobo Glo's within 1 week of each other.

I have tried syncing both via kobo desktop and wirelessly, and experienced the above problems with both methods spread over the 2 devices.

Thanks

Firstly, for the space problem, how many books do you have? And what type? Is that 9GB of epub or comics or something else? And how much space are you using in the main memory? How big is the database.

The reason for asking is that the device records information about the books in a database. This is in the main memory. If that runs out of space, then there will be problems writing the database to the disk. And if you do a sync and there are books to download, they will be put on the SD card. And the firmware update needs about 90MB of space to download. The device is supposed to manage this. For example, when I deliberately reduced the free space to about 50MB, it wouldn't download an update.

The types of books are important to the size of the database. An epub with a lot of chapters, will use more space. A kepub version of the same book uses even more. A CBZ uses a lot less as it doesn't have a lot of the metadata. And the ratio of database space used by a CBZ to the book size is a lot less than that for a kepub or epub.

For the time taken to do a factory reset, I'm not sure. I haven't done one for a while. Is there a difference between having the SD card inserted and not? And the device shows various steps. From memory, there is a resetting step, a restoring step, then it restarts and shows the dancing boxes before starting the setup process. That includes updating the firmware. Did you notice if any of the steps was particularly longer than before?

Davidfor,

All my syncing is with books I have bought from Kobo and am using either the Kobo desktop app or wireless syncing to my Kobo account to download. None of the books are comics, they are all kepubs, and I have a 16gb micro sdhc card attached to both Glo's.

There seems to be no difference between having the sd card inserted or not when doing the reset.

The main reason I was reseting both devices was because I was seeing error messages saying that the sd cards had errors on them when I was using the kobo desktop to update to the latest version.

The last time I checked the sqlite database it was 120mb (which is when I asked you for help). I have not got to the stage when I am comfortable connecting to calibre to delete the extra covers and recommendations yet on this last reset. I normally wait until I have all the books synced through kobo and then use calibre to amend the metadata.

Also if this helps when I have reset each device they have retained the settings for the light i.e. 30%, from memory when I had factory reset in the past the light had reset to 100%.

Thanks
