Thumbs up Free (DRM-free) 3 novels from ReAnimus Press [Vintage & Modern Sci-Fi & Mystery]

Well, as a US Thanksgiving weekend special, fellow MR member publisher ReAnimus Press are holding a sale in their direct-buy webstore, as well as giving away 3 free books (2 science fiction, 1 mystery).

The sale is good through Dec 1st, according to the newsletter, and gives you 30% off all the ebooks (DRM-free available worldwide in an ePub/Mobi bundle) in their webstore with the coupon THX14 (NB: the newsletter warns to apply the coupon to the code box before adding your selected books to the cart; also, many more titles can be seen than display on the basic store page, by clicking the genre categories in the sidebar).

ReAnimus specializes in re-publishing backlist works from Golden Age-ish and classic 70s-era science fiction authors (and some newer continuations of assorted stuff and a few more modern titles) as well as selected works from other genres such as mystery, romance, and non-fiction, and they happen to have a good chunk of backlist from such old school luminaries as Norman Spinrad, Damon Knight, Ursula K. Le Guin, whom I shouldn't have to ISFDB/Wikipedia-link for you if you've paid any attention to the history of the field. They've also newer and more specialized authors like Megan Lindholm AKA Robin Hobb and classic Twilight Zone & Star Trek episode writer Jerry Sohl, among others.

Their books are also mostly distributed via Smashwords to Kobo, where they are couponable, as well as directly on Amazon & B&N. However, if you live in an area where Kobo isn't passing out the good coupons anymore, the sale discount seems like a pretty good offer if you just want to buy stuff openly available to you without having to lie or jump through hoops.

(ETA: also, there seem to be a lot of titles in the direct-buy webstore which aren't available at Kobo, including a whole bunch of Kate Wilhelm (ISFDB, SYKM, Wikipedia) backlist for a reasonably low price. Mostly her mystery stuff, though.)

And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day.

Because not just one, but three nice freebies, plus a fairly good tie-in sale promotion, offered directly and straightforwardly to all, and with decent notice given in a readily-available obvious outlet, which I don't have to haunt Twitter and lose sleep due to timezone differences to even find out about, much less try and get in the 1-hour window allotted to their randomly-timed offerings, is A Good Thing™ which I heartily encourage all the other direct-buy publishers to start doing again, for which I will cheerfully give them a dedicated promotional boost should they do so.

Enjoy!

The three free books are as follows (enter the coupon into the Apply Coupon box, and the DRM-free ePub and Mobi download links will show up directly above the box once it's accepted):
  1. The Multiple Man by multiple Hugo Award-winning author Ben Bova (ISFDB, Wikipedia), his vintage sfnal standalone suspense thriller originally out from Bobbs Merrill in 1976. Use prfree1 in the coupon box.

As the President is speaking inside an auditorium in Boston, the President's Press Secretary discovers a body in an alley outside: The body of the President.
  2. Siege of Stars by Nature science journal editor Henry Gee (ISFDB, Wikipedia), who according to ISFDB, has also written under the pseudonym Charles Dexter Ward, which strikes me as perhaps not the most auspicious penname to use unless one has a deep desire to see combined batwings and tentacles up close and personal with no guarantee of surviving the experience. Anyway, this is the 1st in his Sigil Trilogy of newly-written classically-styled epic space opera. Use prfree2 in the coupon box.

The Universe is dying from within. No one knows how to save it, so the Elders give a young Drover a last ditch chance to stop the rot. If only she knew where to begin.

Unaware of the threat to the universe, Ruxhana Fengen Kraa, Admiral of the 17th Rigel Fleet, is about to be cashiered for a stupendous tactical error. But Special Ops has an important and most bizarre job for him.

Eons away in time, Jack Corstophine is an archaeologist on Earth with an intuition about the land that he can't put into words—until the beautiful and brilliant Jadis Markham comes into his life. Together, they discover that the landscape of Europe is far from natural. The Earth bears the scars of an ancient civilization that goes back millions of years — and has terrible implications for the future of mankind.

  3. Local Knowledge by Conor Daly, who according to the bio-blurb is a pseudonym for a practicing attorney. This is the 2nd in their Kieran Lenahan mystery series starring a professional lawyer-turned-golfer, this installment originally out from Kensington in 1996, and has quoted blurb praise from the New York Times and Publisher's Weekly. Use prfree3 in the coupon box.

Set in the world of pro-am golf, Kieran Lenahan, golf pro at Milton Country Club in Westchester County, N.Y., has just earned a berth in a local PGA tournament when the police inform him that the body of one of his club's co-owners has been fished out of a water hazard.

Lenahan, a former lawyer, is stunned to hear he has been named in the dead man's will and designated to evaluate a set of rare, legendary Blitzklubs clubs, the sale of which is the sole inheritance for the dead man's beautiful trophy wife.

Then the clubs are stolen, and Lenahan's young shop assistant, a reforming juvenile delinquent, is arrested for the murder. Lenahan must find the real murderer to free his assistant, search for the clubs—and prepare to play his opening PGA round.
