Wanna Free Ebook? Our MR Uploaders!
Okay, this is probably in the wrong place - I'm not asking for help. But after a tiny frustration in trying to conveniently find all the people who have taken the time and effort to upload ebooks and list them in a convenient way, I've manually compiled the list so we could all see who these 99 fine people are (not just the top 5 posters) and what they've done. If I have made a mistake and left someone out or miscounted, my apologies to you.
Thanks to all of you! And please make more!! ![]() ![]() What?! You haven't contributed yet? No time like the present to start. Last edited by vivaldirules; 06-17-2008 at 05:59 PM. Reason: Replaced broken file |

Sorry, here it is as an RTF file, too. By the way, you knew that our five top uploaders are Patricia, RWood, Madam Broshkina, HarryT, and Dr. Drib. But did you know that the next five top uploaders are Nate the great, JSWolf, Stanart, BenG, and nrapallo each of whom have posted over 100 books? Half of our uploaders have posted only one or two books but these include many books that have been downloaded hundreds of times each.

Actually, you can't see a list by the number of downloads, can you? Only by the number of times the posts have been opened. To see the number of downloads, you'd have to open all 5000+ posts individually.

In case you're curious, we've averaged over 15 new ebooks per day at MobileRead since last fall. That compares with about 100 new ebooks per day at Sony and about 190 at Amazon for the Kindle. But ours are FREE (and legal) and hand-made by volunteers. Just in case you're curious.

I'm getting my nerve up to try to do one. It's sort of intimidating.

Relax, DixieGal. It's as easy or as hard as you want to make it. If you download a text from Gutenberg and just strip our the legaleze at the beginning and end, it can take as little as 5 minutes once you've set up the tool you want to use. If you add a nice Table of Contents or illustrations or fix some formatting issues, it can take longer. I've spent up to 8 hours on one but that's only because I had the time to spend and felt that it would be useful to do so and I rather enjoyed doing it, too. Usually, it's an hour or two for me. Don't do more than you want to because it's always possible to turn an effort into a chore that's unpleasant.

Looking at the E-books forum topics sorted by date gives you some interesting insights.
I'm a family genealogist. I like personal and community history. I like archives. Much of what has happened at MobileRead occurred long before I arrived in January 2008. It would be interesting to have a thread that summarizes significant events/threads in the history of MobileRead with links where possible. And since significant is in the eyes of the beholder, here are some suggestions on topics I would search out:

maybe you could start the thread, with whatever significant events you've discovered (the info on uploaded files is a good start, i think), and then people could add to it with other significant events. like the milestones thread, but for the site itself rather than individual members, and (somewhat, at least) retrospective. |

A timeline of the site's milestones. I'm a relative new-comer (joined the day after zelda_pinwheel!) so I would only have insights into the past 6 months or so. As one thread this can get unwieldy. To do this in chronological order would be impossible, so I would propose a discussion/thoughts thread and then the actual biography write-up in ebook format or a new thread that could be edited to ensure it remained linear. Any volunteers? long-time members? moderators? EDIT: No wait! Stop the presses! This is great stuff for a community-contributed MR wiki entry. Who's that wiki-guy again .... oh yeah, Dale, any suggestions? ![]() SUGGESTION: This wiki MobileRead has already been started and has a History section! It is seriously lacking, though! ![]() Last edited by nrapallo; 06-19-2008 at 12:16 PM. Reason: change of thought |
