Oops...

I dropped my kindle It survived, but there's a little cluster of grey pixels that won't change colour. I've reset the device to force a screen refresh, but they're still there...

I assume that this is just physical damage from the fall? Or is there anything else I can try?

It's not too bad, because it's in the margin rather than the middle of the screen. But it berates me with my carelessness every time i see it...

Physical damage, I'm afraid: some of the capsules on the eInk screen (probably the point of impact) have burst. One of the reasons to always keep your Kindle in a decent protective case.

Let's hope the damage doesn't spread.

If it does, then the substrate as well may be affected.

Hopefully, the damage is contained.

It shouldn't spread - it's not substrate damage.

Darn.

It hasn't spread in the last 20 hours or so, so it should be fine in that respect. Just that now every time I look at it I'll have a reminder of my clumsiness! I keep it in a sleeve when it's in my backpack, but I find it's nicer to hold without a cover. I may have to rethink that

Oh well, live and learn, as they say. I keep all my devices in cases precisely because I do drop them from time to time. It's easily done.

Worth adding that if you do decide to replace the device, contact Kindle CS. They will (according to many reports here) always offer a generous discount on a replacement device, even when the damage is self-inflicted.

I got my son a Kobo Touch with a spot like that, and it hasn't changed. Glad to hear it will never spread.

I'm commenting on an issue that may be hidden due to the device falling.

It's conceivable that, in addition to bursting pixels, that a crack may have resulted that will start to spread, an issue not yet noticeable but one that may develop at a later time...

I've been there, but with a Sony device...

I had placed it on the bed and forget it was there. In a fit of uncommon activity one morning, I decided to make the bed, so I threw the sheets and blankets onto the floor. I never knew how aerodynamic my Sony 505 was until it sailed about 10 feet away. Fortunately, it was in a case, and the only damage done was cosmetic - very hard to notice.

Some substrate damage can be like a crack in a windshield: changing weather can contribute to the crack eventually expanding.....but, as I mentioned, I hope that the only damage are those burst pixels.

Well, I have an interesting history with damaged ereaders - my Sony broke, spontaneously, overnight. My cheapo replacment, a cool-er, lasted and lasted well past the point that I wanted to replace it with a kindle, until I dropped it (and it really was an accident, not on purpose ). My Kindle Keyboard lasted years, and is in fact still going strong, but I decided to upgrade anyway and then I go and drop the new one!

Don't you think that dropping two readers might perhaps be a gentle hint from above that it's time to consider using a case?

Well, the two incidents were about 5 years apart, but you're not wrong. The two reasons I don't have a case yet are:
a) I prefer the feel of the uncased kindle,
b) very few cases are available to ship to my country, and the one that is i didn't really like. The plan was to wait until there were cases available locally, I just didn't expect to be so clumsy right off the bat!
