Thumbs up Free (nook/Kindle/Kobo/iTunes) Patton's Spaceship by John Barnes [Sci-Fi Alt History]

Patton's Spaceship by Hugo, Nebula, and James Tiptree Jr. Award-finalist John Barnes (ISFDB, Wikipedia) is the 1st in his Timeline Wars series of multiverse-hopping alternate history action adventure/military conspiracy thrillers, free courtesy of publisher Open Road Media, who are e-printing it from its 1997 HarperPrism original.

This is apparently their selected free ebook of the day for Nov 4th, which is rather unusual since usually they choose a US public domain title to officially freebie-ize, but this is a welcome variation and I hope they do it again sometime.

Currently free, just for one day @ B&N, Kobo & iTunes & Google Play (all available to Canadians), and slated to drop at Amazon sometime after midnight Pacific Time.

I'll note that if you're interested in continuing with the other books in the series, Open Road Media titles happen to be couponable @ Kobo.

And I will also note for the benefit of our UK Gentle Readers that ORM generally does not make their daily freebies (or even most of their deep-discount sale titles) available to the UK and you should not expect this one to cross the pond (though you may perhaps be pleasantly surprised). However, you can always lie to your choice of North American stores.

And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day.

Because I happen to rather like what (admittedly little) I've read of John Barnes' fiction writing, and his One for the Morning Glory (Wikipedia) is still one of my very favourite quirky swashbuckling fantasy adventure faux fairy tales, and I'm a sucker for alternate histories, especially of the timeline-hopping/AU crossover sort, so today is another good day here in Canada.

Enjoy!

Description
An unstoppable conspiracy of terror and death threatens a million alternate Earths in the first book of the Timeline Wars science fiction series

There are a million different Earths across an infinite number of timelines—and every one of them is in peril.

Mark Strang became a bodyguard and private investigator when terrorists killed his family; now he spends his days protecting Pittsburgh’s helpless and abused. But while on a mission to save the life of a ten-year-old girl, Strang is inexplicably cast into an alternate reality, transported to a different time on another Earth, where America was defeated in the Second World War and now suffers under the brutal yoke of Nazi oppression. Joining up with the remnants of the Resistance in the Free Zone—and allied with such notable commanders as George Patton and John F. Kennedy—Strang is suddenly a marked man and the last hope in a desperate fight for freedom, not only on this world but on countless others. For a war unlike any other is raging across time and dimensions, threatening every possible Earth, including Strang’s own. And the enemy will not rest until the entire multiverse is in chains.

In his epic and action-packed science fiction saga the Timeline Wars, John Barnes takes alternate-history SF to new heights, ingeniously reinventing and reinvigorating a genre popularized by such acclaimed authors as Harry Turtledove while joining the stellar ranks of Robert Heinlein and Joe Haldeman.
