Updates from BB with Airplane Mode On?
New PW2 2014, shipped with 5.4.3.2 so I put on AM and was reading. Suddenly it says it's restarting, then apply update, then restarting. This is new... at least for me. I didn't know that Amazon could do things with wifi off.
Very creepy! ![]() |

I assume the update was already downloaded...
Unless you think Amazon ships creepy 3G chips in ALL their Kindles... right next to the secret battery which it runs off of so you don't notice the horrible battery life. |

Amazon has never asked you to accept an OTA update. Whether WiFi is on or off surely did not make a difference there...

![]() It just struck me as odd that the update started while wifi was off, had been for quite a while, and I had just received it, set it up and turned it off. Never had one update that quickly or while wifi was off and didn't like it. Control baby! Last edited by pghaworth; 10-28-2014 at 08:10 AM. |

That is actually quite common in the non ebook areas that is called a push update. What amazon does is anytime you activate a new kindle it automatically tells the amazon server what version of firmware you have. When the come out with a new version of the firmware a part of the code says if any customer has this model of kindle and has an older version of firmware than this then automatically push this firmware to them. They do that so that you do not have to bother going through the steps to upgrade your firmware yourself. Its easier on you the customer and its good customer relations. Other companies do the same thing, Sun does the same thing with their Java software and Adobe does the same thing with their Acrobat reader software. Its done for your convenience. If it really concerns you, the firewall on your home network can be told not to allow pushes and it will prevent all pushes from Amazon, Sun or Adobe. I however allow the pushes, what I am concerned about who is sending information from my PC out to the internet. The only software that should be allowed to do that is: your web browser (without that you can not web surf) and your security software (without that the software can't download and install updates).

Sun and Adobe, yeah, I want their push updates, along with my browser and and my security software (worst I've ever used - dumping it soon). |

I did the downgrade with my PW1 and it worked really well. I was hoping not to have to wait on my PW2 before Amazon auto-upgraded me. |

All you need is a decent unzip program that handles .tar.gz -- I suggest 7-Zip if you are on Windows.
As the man himself says ![]() The snapshot contains extra stuff, but it also contains the same "kindle-5.4-jailbreak.zip" as in the main thread. |

http://ixtab.tk/kindle-touch-updates.php I had a backed up update history to follow on my PW1, but I was at 5.4.3.2 and don't see that one in the lineup for PW2. Is there a better place to get the downgrade? All help gratefully accepted. ![]() ![]() |

Awesome! I guess you got something weird from somewhere else without realizing it, before?
Anyway, I answered your other question where I saw it first, in the other thread. ![]() |
