[Bug?][Video] Adding Books to Collections

Hi all,

Please see the below video I took. Just upgraded to the new firmware (10/16/2014) and an issue I've had adding books to a collection is still present, both before and after. My steps i have to sometimes go through to add a book to a collection (Not exactly demo'ed in the video but close):
  • Long press on a book
  • Select "Add to collection"
  • Select a collection, causing the check to appear to the right
  • Tap "Save"
  • Tap the collection to uncheck it
  • Tap Save
  • Re-Long press on the book and "Add to Collection"
  • Check a Collection then tap "Save"
  • Finally the book is added.

I would say this happens about 60-70% of the time I try to add a book to a collection. Bug for the developers maybe? Am I doing something wrong? You can see in the video that the Save button reacts but nothing happens after 2-3 taps. On the last tap, it finally acknowledges my addition request.

Sorry I can't help with the rest of your problem since I don't use collections but to add a YouTube video, you just need the last part of the URL after the v=, not the complete URL. For your video, that would be the fsMU18l9w10. A bit counter intuitive.

I never move books to collections on the reader itself, I always use Calibre to set collections so I avoid the tedious task of sorting them on the reader. But I just tried it manually now like you're doing, and the book is instantly put into the new collection. It also remains listed in the previous collection as well. It does seem like nothing happens and it bounces back to the book title, but if you stop after doing it once and go check the collection you added the book to, you'll probably find it already listed there and you don't have to repeat it.

But again, Calibre is so much easier and faster to manage your collections. Once you set it up right, you do nothing but transfer your books and they're automatically placed into the correct collection you assigned.

@tnforpaul45: As with Ripplinger, I do all my collection management from calibre. But, I have tested what you tried and have had no problems with adding the book to the collection.

The problem with the save button is something I see occasionally with various other buttons. Sometimes the button shows the highlight, but doesn't do anything. I don't have a clue what is happening or a pattern. Other than it never happens when I accidentally tap the wrong button.

I've noticed a few times that when I quickly tap a button, it highlights but doesn't actually do anything. An example is when I remove a book from the Kobo UI, I've found that pressing and holding the remove button for a short while works reliably.

As for tapping the wrong button? Murphy was a raving optimist.

Thank ya'll. I appreciate you taking the time to look at the issue I've noticed. Its a small issue and I eventually get it to work. And I know that Calibre is easier. But I like to sometimes rearrange my collections while at 30,000 feet So its just frustrating to find one obscure area of the user interface that is not as well polished as the rest.

If I am doing something wrong, I appreciate anyone giving me better instructions. I hope though that maybe a Kobo employee lurker will see this and pass it along to the developers. I like to do anything I can to help out my favorite e-reader brand

Thank you!

Kobo used to post on this forum and respond to people's queries and problems, but it's been years since I last saw them do this.

Inkblot,

It is very unfortunate to hear that. Keeping in touch with the grassroots "deep" user of their devices is what kept Kobo's products innovative and them in touch with customers. Once they lose sight of that, they are in danger of heading in Amazon's direction.

Let us hope they still at least lurk.
