Custom Column: Price

Is there a specific function I can use for a custom column so that when I enter in the cost of a book it automatically appears in the following format: $0.00 ?
(I'll even accept $00.00)

'price' is usually a floating point number

You could format it in the export template (but why would you? I will read a $5.99 book today?).
BTW what would you do if you bought a book while traveling where the currency was not the same as here? (Yes, I bought books while on holiday in the UK)

1. You are right. the format was given as an example under floating point, not integer.

2. I use it as a way to see: (a) How much I've spent over time. (b) How many ebooks I buy vs how many I freebies I acquire. (c) Yes, I have used cost to encourage me to read something, simply because I spent money on it, in the past. (d) I've also used it to help meet criteria for certain book club and/or reading challenges.

3. Now that I have that question answered, is there a way to get the price to show in "Book Details" when the price is set at "$0.00", or will I have to fudge it and set my freebies to a penny each?

The floating point custom column can do this. What you want is one of the examples shown in the column definition dialog. Move your mouse pointer over the "Format for numbers" box and you will see an example for "Price".

"Penny each" is the only thing that will work at the moment.

I submitted changes to Kovid to show zero-valued numeric custom columns in book details. If he can accept the code then 0.00 will start working. However, there may be issues I didn't see that prevent him from using this change.

A while ago I had asked in the plugin idea thread if there was a quick way to show the sum of all the entries in a numerical column. It could be on request, i.e. press a button or hover over the column title, instead of a real-time updated total. I know I can export to CSV but this takes time. It would be nice to see total $ spent on ebooks or total pages read on the fly. Is there any possibility of this ever being implemented? Thanks.

Not much of one unless someone makes a plugin to do it. The problem is that functions like that require access to all books, not just the current one. The template system is limited to one book at a time.

It is of course possible to do this sort of thing in plugins and in python "calibre helper scripts" (calibre-debug -e script.py), but neither of these are useful for someone who isn't already a python programmer.
