ADE and email question
I'm in the process of migrating to a new email address.
For ADE purposes, can I continue to use my old email address? I plan on changing my email address at Kobo, but if I use ADE (desktop) to download a purchase, can I authorize my ADE desktop using my old email and authorize my device using my old email? I tried asking some questions at Adobe, but it quickly devolved to "we don't have online support for free products, please check for help in forums." So here I am. ![]() I'm using ADE 1.7. Thank you. |

Have just checked my Kobo account uses a different email, than the one my adobe ID is registered to. I've not had any problems buying books.
However, not owning one I don't know if the Kobo has to be registered using the same details as your Kobo account & whether this would cause conflict. Hopefully a Kobo owner will be along soon to clarify. Last edited by Polarpenguin; 10-20-2014 at 11:56 AM. |

At some point, my old email address will no longer be valid. Does ADE care whether the email address is valid? |

If you aren't going to maintain control of that email address, then you should change your Adobe ID to use your new one. You'll need the email to make any account changes, and if someone else ends up with that email address, they could probably snatch your Adobe account by using the "lost password" feature.

Can I change my Adobe ID/email address on Adobe's website, but still use my old email address for ADE desktop? |

John, I agree with CWatkinsNash. However, before changing anything, I suggest you do two (maybe three) things:
(1) Pose your questions to a tech-savvy librarian at your local public or university library. The awesome librarians at the libraries I frequent seem to know ADE (and other software critical to ereading, such as OverDrive) inside and out. If their help proves sufficient and satisfactory, then maybe you can then skip suggestion (2). (2) If you're switching email addresses because you're leaving a school or company that currently hosts your email account, and not because your email account was hacked, then ask the establishment if they can forward emails from your old email address to your new one. A school will likely grant your request; I'm not so sure about a former employer. Nonetheless, it doesn't hurt to ask. (3, a corollary to 2) If you're switching email addresses merely because the previous one was hacked, then I suggest you work with the hosting service to wrest back control of it and implement multi-factor authentication. Then, even though you've adopted a new email address, maintain ownership of the previous (hacked) one as well. Last edited by Froide; 10-20-2014 at 01:33 PM. |

Froide already stated most of what I was going to say, but to answer your question, if you can't hang on to that email address then yes, you'll need to re-download any DRM'd ebooks you have in order to use them with the updated ID.
Once you change your ID email, ADE desktop will likely throw an invalid authorization error the next time you try to download a book if you don't update the account info in the program. |

My current email address is tied to my ISP. I'd like to get rid of this dependency, so I'm slowly migrating to a new email address.
I'll ask my librarian, but I'd still like some sort of verification from multiple sources. I'm guessing my library will be a little iffy, they may have a lot of information, but I'm guessing it will be more towards loaning, and may not Have practical experience with purchased content. |

I can't blame you! (In other words, I agree with you.) RE: I'm guessing my library will be a little iffy Don't underestimate your librarians. After all, they regularly purchase content, n'est ce pas? And ADE (and other purveyors of digital services purchased and licensed by libraries) regularly update and offer customer service to librarians. Thus, librarians (at least those assigned to work with digital content) tend to be better-informed as well as have better contacts than we "civilians". Good luck! Totally, agree that if you are no longer going to have access to your old email you really need to change over everything including Adobe ID.
This may be a good opportunity to investigate the use of Calibre & become friends with apprentice Alf. Then you could download all your previous purchases safe in the knowledge that once changed your new Adobe ID will not cause you any problems. |

Get a gmail account to use with ADE. Then you don't have to worry about your email address changing because you've switched provider, jobs, schools, etc.

I'm not concerned about someone taking over my Adobe account? I think it only has my name and fake DOB.
Won't I need to deauthorize and re-authorize all my devices also. I think I'm likely to run into trouble with ADE and too many activations. I don't have much faith in them after their "we don't support free products" statement. |

![]() As an aside, migrating to a new email has been pretty painless. It looks like "ADE" will be the most hassle. Apple also took a little work. |

I'd be surprised if you could re-download all of your books at this point.
Half the stores I've used no longer exist, even if you have only used Kobo, can you still download the book if it has since been pulled for sale? |
