Heck yeah! Creating a Debian chroot is easy, but I haven't yet figured out how to make updating the framebuffer actually draw to the screen yet. Or does fbdev take care of it automatically? I haven't gotten around to trying X yet.
I spot Netsurf on your screenshot, which I think would work great for on-device browsing. Have you tried if e.g. Liferea provides a usable interface as well? An RSS reader is sorely missing on the default software. I was thinking in the direction of compiling Synergy on the device itself to use my regular mouse and keyboard and then running applications on my desktop transported through ssh -C. A bit roundabout perhaps, but I'd want to at least give it a try before discounting it because it might allow the use of heavy software like LO Writer. (Although I prefer Markdown and LaTeX regardless, so not the biggest problem if latency were too high.) |

installation
Hi!
I rebuilt Xorg server to make framebuffer updating, many debian programs could work well. The packages are ready now, installation guide is here: http://guang6321.blog.163.com/blog/s...1491323748816/ |

@AxaRu
You're probably aware, but I figured I should mention that messing with the boot and Linux image stuff is a lot riskier than anything else you could do. Make an extra backup or two of the whole internal microSD first, that kind of thing. :P @guang6321 I'd also be really interested in the sources or configuration for the stuff you modified, especially u-boot, the kernel, and X.org. I assume the customs DEBs are simply compiled against the custom xserver without any modifications of their own? And there's also all of these fun little utilities under /opt/kobo/bin. @Those interested in browsing the contents of the image. Figure out the internal partitions: Code:
$ sudo parted kobo-hd-debian-rootfs-20141013.img [sudo] password for blabla: GNU Parted 3.2 Using /home/blabla/kobo-hd-debian-rootfs-20141013.img Welcome to GNU Parted! @Frenzie
I have all source codes to build the system, the source codes are huge, I will upload when ready. The customs DEBs are modified to fix bugs, and the most important modification is Xorg-Server, that makes Eink work in Debian. |

Fantastic. I'll check it out later.
Edit: 14 kB/s download from China. *taps fingers* The same thing happened last time, but when I tried at a later point in time it went at 2 MB/s. Oh well, I'll have to be patient. :P Last edited by Frenzie; 10-26-2014 at 10:05 AM. |
