Questions re ADE Annotations +Manifest on side loaded only device

I'm not sure whether it's a regular occurrence that ADE Annotations and Manifest directory/files shows up on a Glo that doesn't use wifi, and only has Calibre cleaned and side loaded ebooks, and is not ADE authorised .....

Yesterday I signed out of one account on the glo and then used a newly downloaded version of Kobo Desktop for PC to install the Glo firmware. I then side loaded the epubs from Calibre.

When I noticed the files I deleted .adobe-digital-editions directory, and the Digital Editions directory containing the files Annotations and Manifest, with no harm done because I was able to continue reading the book that was in the Manifest. The Manifest file appeared to copy the book from the book list into it.

But the next time that I plugged the Glo into the PC I noticed that these directories/files are back, and the book is back in the Manifest.

Is that normal?

Below are the pics.

The adobe-digital-editions directory contains the device.xml file which is used to identify your device when/if you register it with Adobe using ADE. After registering with Adobe, a second file called activation.xml will be added with your Adobe account and other information to allow reading Adobe ADEPT DRMed epubs.

The Digital Editions folder is used when you use the Adobe RMSDK to read epubs. If it is missing, it will be recreated the next time you read an epub.

So, yes, the directories/files you saw were normal.

Thanks for your answer!

It's funny how the memory plays tricks, because I was sure that I hadn't seen the ADE folders/files before. The only time I look is when I side load a firmware update usually, and I just don't recall seeing anything ADE.

I wondered if it was something new and seemed to fit into Adobe's recent interest in sending book information back to Adobe. I never use Digital Editions, although I've got v2 on the PC. (I download with Sony Reader for PC).

Kobo made some changes as the default Adobe folders were present but Kobo did use them or only very selectively. The authorisation/activation folder was used but others such as Thumbnails were not used.
Book thumbnails are now created but I seriously doubt if they are actually used.
As far as I know, the only thumbnails Kobo uses are stored in the .kobo-images folder. This folder also contains tumbnails for sideloaded epubs.

I don't have a "Digital Editions/thumbnails" directory on my Glo. I think when I have seen one, it was after connecting to the PC and using ADE to sideload a book. I haven't done that, or bothered to authorise the Glo since the last factory reset.

And yes, the cover images are store under the .kobo-images for books in the main memory.

David I've never used ADE to sideload a book, and my memory is obviously playing tricks because I can't recall seeing the Digital editions/thumbnails until I downloaded a new version of Kobo Desktop for PC and then installed the 3.8 firmware a short number of days ago .....

I definitely don't have it but know I have seen it before. I'll check my Touch tonight as ADE has seen it recently and I think the Kobo desktop has as well.

Of course, I am running beta firmware. Maybe this was something that started in 3.5.0 when Kobo updated the RMSDK and has fixed in the betas.

For me, just copying a .epub ebook to the internal storage and having it processed is enough to trigger the creation of the Digital Editions folder on the internal storage, you don't need to get ADE involved. If I create an annotation on that ebook, I get the title.epub.annot file in the Annotations subdirectory while the title.epub.xml with the added date/time, etc. is created in the Manifest subdirectory when I added the ebook.

Since I keep all except kepubs on the external storage, I don't normally see that directory. I seem to remember some discussion about that directory being one of the differences between using internal and external storage as far as accessing annotations but that was a while back and I could be wrong.

One quick question: are you storing your epubs on an external uSD card or on the internal storage?

This is what I have observed on my Glo, I haven't noticed any difference with different firmware vesions:

Whenever I read a book with the epub reader, including DRM-free epubs, entries (.xml files) for the book are created under "Digital Editions/Manifest" and "Digital Editions/Annotations". These entries remain after I delete the book from the Glo. Since I don't want to keep the annotations, I delete all these entries every now and then.

A huge number of entries are generated in "Digital Editions/Thumbnails" when I connect the device to ADE (I use version 1.7.2). I always delete "Digital Editions/Thumbnails" after connecting to ADE because it is not used at all by the Glo, it is just a waste of space.

Last edited by GeoffR; 10-14-2014 at 10:51 PM. Reason: ... I delete all these entries now and then.

I was only meaning the thumbnails subdirectory that had been mentioned. I don't see it, but feel it was created by ADE at some point.

I've never noticed when the "Digital Editions" directory gets created. I assumed it and the manifest directory were created when an epub or PDF was opened. But during the initial processing would makes sense. The annotations subdirectory and files get created when you open an epub. Or maybe when it is closed. In any case, they are there even if there are no annotations when I next connect to the PC.

I haven't thought about the other files in the "Digital Editions" directory, only the annotations. Those definitely aren't created for books on the SD card. It must mean that ADE and RMSDK doesn't handle the SD card properly.

That directory and it's subdirectories are used for .epub and not the Kobo epub .kepub.epub ebooks.

Did a quick test and using 3.8.0, the Digital Editions directory tree is created when I first open an epub on the internal storage to read and not during the initial processing after disconnect. I still seem to remember those entries being created during the processing with an earlier firmware but it appears that is no longer so. Opening a new ebook adds a new entry set.
