problems with saving

i have had mixed success saving my work - mostly it doesn't seem to work. in the Calibre Book Editor, I both "save" and "save a copy". I still have not figured out where "save" puts the saved copy (and lost a bunch of work), so I started to also "save a copy", but only some of these will reopen. Most of them i get an error code:

calibre, version 2.1.0
ERROR: Failed to open book:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "site-packages/calibre/gui2/tweak_book/job.py", line 34, in run
File "site-packages/calibre/gui2/tweak_book/boss.py", line 52, in get_container
File "site-packages/calibre/ebooks/oeb/polish/container.py", line 1238, in get_container
File "site-packages/calibre/ebooks/oeb/polish/container.py", line 938, in __init__
InvalidEpub: No META-INF/container.xml in epub

i have a "metadata.opf" file which i cannot open on my mac. not sure if this would be of use.

any help?

metadata.opf is the backup of the Library record. It is NOT the same as content.opf which is part of the book

The save a copy shows the standard file system folder chooser dialog. So it is wherever you set/used

yes, i started using "save a copy" instead of "save" and i know where those copies are. problem is, most of them do not open, with the error code above. i got an older version to open, so i'm not sure why it only saves properly some of the time.

"Save" should save changes to the original file that was opened--whether it's a book in calibre's library or a file external to calibre.

Regarding the books that have the "No META-INF/container.xml in epub" error: are you certain you've not tried to edit them with something else (after saving with calibre-edit and before trying to reopen with calibre-edit)?

You should also consider upgrading to the latest version of calibre. Been lots of bug-fixes since 2.1.0.
