Using the custom properties on pdf

Hey guys,

Is there any way to write (or read) new custom properties on a PDF ? Seems that I can create a custom property in calibre but it doesn't use the PDF custom properties field...

If I open adobe reader, go to file -> properties -> Custom.

Here's an example:

calibre custom column metadata is stored in XMP metadata in the PDF. Try the following experiment.

Save the PDF to disk using the calibre save to disk button. Then re-import it, and you will see that it has all custom column values.

Yup, I could even see the xml generated from the XMP too, which is great. However, it would be nice to have access to the native pdf property so we could use adobe to look at them or just store some stuff up.

Adobe doesn't allow you to modify/view the XMP, only the custom property...

There is no way to map calibre custom columns to adobe custom properties, the latter are not flexible enough.

And IIRC, if you use one of the Adobe PRO tools you can view/edit the XML metadata.

Agreed, however, to me, custom columns and custom properties are different. Leaving the custom columns in the XMP make sense, as it's really calibre specific columns. However, what I'm saying is that we should have the ability to use the adobe custom properties as well. For example, there is no way to "import" nor "export" to adobe custom properties in calibre.

The reason I say this is that I'm using it for some stuff (adobe custom property) and at this time, there is no way to view the data in any kind of form through calibre (let me know if there is a way somehow).

I'm afraid adding support for format specific metadata extensions is not a road I want to go down.
