Out of all the sale titles, I've read and can recommend Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's A Mortal Glamour, which was a pretty decent historical psychological suspense/horror thriller about faith-fueled hysteria, which incorporated good and not overwhelming detail about medieval attitudes and cloister practices. It kept things ambiguous about whether or not there really was a supernatural element to the "evil" or if it was just the people doing it to themselves in the increasing atmosphere of paranoia and distrust, just until the very end.
I paid ~$4 for it during one of Fictionwise's old coupon sales, IIRC, and considered it worth it at that cost. I've also read Lois Duncan's YA suspense thriller The Twisted Window, and while it's not one of her top tier works, I think I'll get it out of nostalgia and to hopefully encourage ORM to put more of her backlist on sale. It does have a solid plot with an interesting twist to it, IIRC. Earlier this month, I did buy Jonathan Carroll's Voice of Our Shadow (on recommendation from another MR member) and the non-fiction Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho by Stephen Rebello (apparently Soon To Be A Major Motion Picture™!) but haven't gotten around to really looking at either yet. Out of the remaining lot, I think I'm definitely going to get that Classics Mutilated anthology since I like classic literature/pop-culture genre mashups (though I prefer different genres), and the Theodore Sturgeon, Elizabeth Hand, and Robert Silverberg (if I don't already have the latter from another old FW purchasing spree), and maybe a Zilpha Keatly Snyder out of more childhood nostalgia if the sample reads well. The Robert Masello history book on occult practices throughout the ages looks interesting as well, and I'll have to give the sample a try and look at any reviews, since ultimately I'm not sure it's something I'm likely to actually read. Thanks for the heads-up! |
