Kobo Glo Driver for calibre 1.5

Hello Readers

Is it possible to import the latest Kobo Glo Driver into a Calibre Linux 1.5 Version ?

The Reason why i´m asking is, that the latest opensuse 13.1 is not supporting QT5 by default. So i ask myself how to get Calibre work with my Reader without installing QT5.

Thanks, Michael

why are you using such an old version? The latest that supports QT4 is 1.48 which is much later than the 1.5 that you mention and will include the requisite driver.

Hello timpi

Well, 1.5 is the latest officiall Version, and i thought it would be higher than 1.48.
But anyway, as far i know is the first Version which supports the Kobo 3.8 Driver Calibre 2.1
from End of August.

The 1.48 release is 43 releases later than the 1.5 release (the last figure is the build number). This equates to a year or so difference in release times as there is a new release on most (but not all) weeks.

As far as I know the Kobo Glo has been supported for some time. The 2.1 release added support for the Kobo Aura HD.

In terms of getting a back-porting a feature to work on older versions, then I believe it is up to an interested user to achieve this. The full source for each Calibre release is freely available.

That is correct, but the change was to add device ids for the H20 and bump the supported firmware version number. There were no actually function changes and there has not been any recently. I'd have to check the notes, but calibre 1.48 does have the latest function. The configuration of the driver has an option "Attempt to support newer firmware". Using this with calibre 1.48 and firmware 3.8.0 is safe. And will be for at least the next firmware versions and probably a couple more afterwards. There has definitely been changes since calibre 1.5. Again, I'd have to look at what, but I know I have made more significant changes in that time than just bumping version numbers.

What I recommend doing is upgrading to calibre v1.48 and setting the firmware support driver option. This will be fine unless you buy a H20. When I hear that someone that can't upgrade past 1.48 has bought a H20, I'll look at solving that problem.

Go to Download for linux doenload and install the calibre binary.

Calibre 2.4 will run on opensuse 13.1--I just and opensuse 13.1 has all the dependencies that calibre needs to run--with no problems, calibre has all the qt5 dependencies it needs buildin.

Remember:
Please do not use your distribution provided calibre package, as those are often buggy/outdated. Instead use the Binary install.

Kovid make 'Official' releases, all else are 'OS distribution' releases and are notoriously out of date on the date of the 'Official' release of the OS. Calibre releases are weekly. OS releases are ???

Also
Release numbers are TEXT, with dot notation not numeric decimals

If you want to really depend on the distro packages for software that isn't up to 5 years old (yay for LTS ) you should be running Arch or Gentoo.

Most distros do one last update when the OS version leaves testing and hits the main download page, and never update anything but the browser and security fixes. The repos are out of date by the time you download the install iso.

Use the official package by Kovid.

Does calibre start and run?

Does calibre start and run from the menu?

If not then open a terminal and run:
Code:
calibre-debug -g
and post the debug log.

bernie

P.S.
check your settings for terminal.

you can try
Code:
mv ~/.config/calibre/ ~/.config/calibre.bak/
and see if it still errors with a clean configuration directory.

But this sounds a lot weirder TBH.

I did already. First i renamed my plugin Folder and than the config Folder.
I even tried a new user. I tried it on KDE3 and KDE4 and also on Fluxbox and TWM.
Nothing works...
