Which conversion is better? ePub to MOBI? or vice versa?
Hello fellow Calibre users,

If I had a choice to get either ePub or MOBI files which one do you guys recommend, in order to have good ePub and MOBI files?

I was wondering if MOBI to ePub conversion in Calibre is just as good as MOBI to ePub..

Would appreciate your wise comments on this. Many thanks.

EPUB has more formatting options (a newer format). Mobi is based on an older (more limited) HTML standard.

Think of it this way; Higher Quality can be downgraded to Lower Quality easily. On the other hand, Lower Quality to Higher Quality will leave the Higher Quality looking the same as the Lower Quality.

So.... ePub (or azw3) should be the preferred Original Format, with mobi as the converted to format.

Got it, so ePub is like a lossless file (FLAC or WAV) while MOBI is like an MP3 (lossy).. So ePub to MOBI is better.. Perfect..

Since all my Kindles can read AZW3 I no longer convert to MOBI for anything. Unless you have a legacy reader that won't read AZW3 I suggest you abandon MOBI. AZW3 is close enough to EPUB that conversions either way work very well.
