Hi all, I just picked up a cheap KPW2 from ebay which is a demo model.
Are there any options for me to erase and install standard software on this? I bought it thinking it would be pretty straightforward....but it isn't! Firstly, the drive shows as no media in Windows Drive Manager, so must assume that there is no FAT32/NTFS partition on this device. Also the settings option is greyed out on the kindle, so looks as though even if I get the .bin on the device thru linux, I can't run an update etc through the device itself. Is it possible to format and reinstall the software through Linux etc? Thanks ![]() ![]() |

![]() You need to use the operator's console connection to the serial port. Notes:
#2 above is the real show stopper here, since I don't own one of the devices to look for myself. (I.E: The person reporting in #3 just might not have been able to find them.) Good, clear, photos of the board, top and bottom would be a big help. There are people here, that from their posts, have opened up a PW2. But none have posted "HowTo" directions of the tear-down. OK then, so best thing to do is to tear it down and take a look?

Teardown seems to be the same as PW1. Remove bezel and remove 11 screws to remove frame from back (noting the one behind the adhesive tape at the top!)

We will just assume its "PW1 style" until we learn differently. Nice photo. You struck gold on #1 - P800 - labeled "serial debug port". The pad highest above the legend (rotate photo 180 degrees) is ground. Which, if same as other Amazon products - GND <--> GND of serial adaptor Rx <--> Tx of 1.8v serial adaptor Tx <--> Rx of 1.8v serial adaptor P800 legend Last edited by knc1; 09-26-2014 at 12:11 PM. |

Say what? You don't have the serial port connections up and running yet?
Heck, I waited 20 minutes. ![]() ![]() In general: Try to get into the recovery menu - Export FAT partition - Connect USB cable to computer - Put Amazon PW2 update_*.bin in root of device - Eject (or safely disconnect) Kindle - Disconnect USB cable - Reboot That *should* install the non-demo firmware for you. (your done - put it together) |

Quick question - how do you get it into recovery mode? Did a bit of searching, but couldn't find any definitive answer |

I am having memory failure on that point. Perhaps someone else can help. If not, then just set your terminal emulator to capture the entire output on the serial port, starting with power-on and we will guess from there. ![]() - - - - - Not a problem, things normally slow down when dealing with those almost microscopic pads. Myself, I need to get on with my day - but people are always around here (we have a very large user-base). Last edited by knc1; 09-26-2014 at 12:42 PM. |

Done:
https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/K5_I...W2_Serial_Port - - - - Note the last index entry on that page - it may be helpful at some point (if the "easy way" does not work). Last edited by knc1; 09-26-2014 at 12:44 PM. |

About the recovery thingy: boot in diags from the uboot prompt? Or possibly interrupt early during boot, since the recovery is the default shell of the kernel's initrd.
