Aura HD freezing: caused by 3.8 FW?

My Aura HD freezes rather too often to my liking. Already twice this day.
It's not on sideloaded books or anything else weird. Just books I bought from Kobo & downloaded via wifi from the store, they're in internal memory, no sd card present.

Typically the device will freeze when I try to turn a page. Often it happens fairly soon after I've started it up.

What I don't get, is why it takes me so long to be able to reboot it (by holding the on/off key). It's almost like in Windows or an Android phone when some app has gone crazy, in a loop or something, and you can't get anything to respond anymore. But what is the device supposed to be doing? Nothing, surely. Just turning a page.
And why isn't there *some* way to force the reset to occur immediately. Because typically, for the first 5 or 10 minutes or so, however long I hold the on/off button, nothing happens. Yes, the light sometimes flashes on, and then goes off again. It doesn't blink, it just goes on for a while and then turns off again.
But usually I have to wait 5 or 10 minutes or so before I can restart the thing and continue to read. That's NOT a good thing for an ereader to do.

I read (in the "freezing after selecting bookmark" thread) that someone had heard from support that they have more reports of freezing, and that there's something wrong with FW 3.8. Is that true? They'd better come up with an update soon then. (And don't make us in Western Europe wait a few weeks before it's rolled out...)

That sounds like you have a corrupt book or database that's causing your freezes.

To "reset" it: you should only need to hold the power button OFF for 20-30 seconds. The screen likely won't change although the light should go off. Wait another 10-20 seconds after you release it before trying to turn it on again. It won't accept ON input immediately after shutting off. The other option would be to try the pin hold in the bottom to reset it. But this really sounds like something specifically related to your device/books than a general firmware issue.

Although if it is a corrupt database you will have to log out of your kobo account and log back in. Unfortunately the device will upon logging back in to your kobo account on the device rebuild your data base and any settings you may have had will be gone. It will also take a bit of time depending on how many books are actually on your device.

Actually, a power cycle or a pinhole reset won't have any effect on database corruption. What you are describing is the first part of a hardware factory reset. He would need to do the hold light button while sliding the power switch step after the 20 seconds hold/release on the power switch.

Sorry, those were meant as two separate comments. What I was describing was how to turn the device off assuming that it wasn't a corrupt database but just a crash. The OP seemed to be saying that he was holding the power button OFF for 5 or 10 minutes which wouldn't get you anywhere.

Well, we can say that someone is more patient than me. I have enough trouble with the 30-30-30 reset for a wireless router.

Perhaps try this:

Remove the books you put on BEFORE YOU HAD A PROBLEM with your reader.

Use the Kobo for awhile to see if the problem persists.

If the problem is gone, then one of those books is bad.

Put back one book at a time on the Kobo AND THEN USE THE KOBO and try to determine when the problem again rears its ugly head.
