Free ebook promo for Apple iOS8 - price-matched elsewhere

To promote iBooks as part of the iOS 8 launch, Apple has a number of free books available. Different titles are available in each country. I found this article which says,
Quote:
"The company will be offering a selection of 54 titles from 39 publishers in 30 countries and nine languages free to users."
The URL from their page to the promo on Apple's website is messed up. I think this is correct http://tw.apple.com/greatfreebooks , but it only works on devices with iTunes.

The US titles are:As has been pointed out here, here, and here, other ebook stores are price-matching at least some of the titles, so it's worth checking your favorite store if you don't do iBooks.

I don't have a good way to see what's available in other countries. Maybe some MobileReaders from elsewhere will post the lists for those of us who like to take virtual international shopping trips.

Okay, after checking around, in the US it looks like only Amazon is price-matching so far, and only 5 titles.

For "Be My Love", Amazon only has the Audible audiobook version. I couldn't find a direct match for the "Justice League: Origin" title. The iTunes listing shows a release date of "Dec 31, 2014" so I'm not sure what's going on there.

(Copy-pasting from the write-up I started before this thread appeared.)

So, to kick off the release of iOS8, Apple is running a "Get started with great free books" promotion in the iTunes store, available in multiple countries in multiple languages.

These seem to be grouped by country/language, but several books which are part of the promo for one country are also unofficially free in another (specifically, Canada, but could also be free for others as well). And some of the titles are price-matched in other stores (specifically, Amazon, but may also show up elsewhere).

Here's a quick round-up listing of the iTunes store countries where the promo seems to be in effect, and also some linkage for the titles which are specifically also free outside their "native" country and/or price-matched elsewhere.

NB: fellow MR member koland notes that if you don't have a recent enough version of iTunes, you won't be able to see the special promo pages.

(Ultimately, due to length and tedium, I decided against listing the individual titles that I didn't see available outside their promo area or price-matched.)

Canada (6 English books + 4 French books, 3 duplicated in US store)

Zagreb Cowboy by Alen Mattich @ Amazon (available to Canadians)

Lost in Shangri-La by Mitchell Zuckoff @ its own thread

Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard @ Amazon (available to Canadians)

US (10 English titles)

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen & Mahalo.com (multimedia enhanced edition) @ iTunes (available to Canadians) ETA: I should warn you that this is a nearly 2 GB file.

UK (6 English Books)

Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb @ its own thread

The Woods by Harlan Coben @ Amazon UK

The One You Really Want by Jill Mansell @ Amazon UK

Only Time Will Tell by Jeffrey Archer @ Amazon UK & AU

The Geneva Trap by Stella Rimington @ Amazon UK

Starter For Ten by David Nicholls @ Amazon UK

Switzerland (4 German, 4 French, 4 Italian; duplicated in Germany, Austria, France, Italy)

Largo Winch: Diptyche tomes 1 & 2 by Jean Van Hamme & Phillipe Francq @ iTunes (available to Canadians)

Das Puppenkind by Eva Maaser @ Amazon UK

Panda Blues by Britta Sabbag @ Amazon (available to Canadians) & Amazon UK

Zona pericolosa by Lee Child @ Amazon IT

Ti prego lasciati odiare by Anna Premoli @ Amazon IT

Assassino senza volto by Henning Mankell @ Amazon IT

Netherlands (4 Dutch books)

Cross Fire by James Patterson (Dutch translation) @ iTunes (available to Canadians)

Spain (5 Spanish titles, duplicated in Mexico and some Spanish-speaking South American countries)

La balada de la cárcel de Reading by Oscar Wilde (bilingual edition) @ iTunes (available to Canadians)

El anticuario by Julián Sánchez @ Amazon ES

Tienes que contario by José Sanciemente @ Amazon ES

Leer o morir by Guadalupe Loaeza @ Amazon ES

Brazil (5 Portuguese titles, nothing available to Canadians or price-matched in other stores as far as I can tell)

Japan (5 Japanese titles, also not available outside or matched)

Australia & New Zealand

Are actually not running this promotion, but instead have some 25 free 1st in series books from mainly Australian & New Zealander authors, nearly all of which are not price-matched, and which you can thus see in the iTunes store for yourself, if applicable.

The ones which did show up in other places have all been posted in their own threads because they popped up earlier due to apparently being official multi-store publisher promos and not just an iTunes thing: Cattra's Legacy, The Sweet Second Life of Darrell Kincaid, Tamar, The Chimera Vector

There's probably more lurking out there in countries I haven't checked yet, but I'm taking a break so I can get something to eat and go over the priority posting queue for the selected freebies tonight.

Denmark is now a country participating in this promo, with 3 titles (all in Danish).

The 2 titles which are also free outside of Denmark are:

Den knuste Tang-hest by Helene Tursten, 1st in her Irene Huss series of police procedural novels, which is actually a Swedish series (in Danish translation) for which I have some of the DVDs of the TV film adaptations @ iTunes (available to Canadians)

Et nyt liv truer by Mette Finderup, 1st in her Emmy series of YA novels @ iTunes (available to Canadians).

Hee. Apparently the iTunes store charges you more for the 3rd freebie depending on whether you're Swedish or Norwegian (though that could just be an exchange rate thing).

NB: if you're looking for more Danish language iTunes freebies, participating publisher Lindelof og Ringhof has two additional titles which are free in Canada, at least.

And if you happen to want to read in Norwegian, Schibsted Forlag, if I'm remembering their name correctly, has a slew of 1st-in-series mostly-historical romances for you, and so does Aller Forlag, although theirs are more translated Harlequins rather than original Norwegian-language works, IIRC.
